How to Incorporate Pause into Leadership

As a leader, have you stopped, pause, and reflected before reacting?  I know this can be difficult at times, especially when in the middle of a crisis.  We want to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.  When pausing, we won’t jump immediately into the wrong conclusion.

Incorporating the Art of Pause into Leadership:

The PAUSE and REFLECT Technique
When at work and someone is rude to you. Or you don’t agree with them.  Pause for three to five seconds before responding. Pausing will give you time to reframe your reply or decide not to respond at all.

Pause, Reflect and Don’t send an email response you will regret!
I think everyone has sent an email they regretted sending sometime or another.

What if you receive a nasty passive/aggressive email?
Before responding to the email.  Write out your reply. Don’t send it and walk away. If possible sleep on it.  Then rewrite the email response, when you have calmed down. Have someone else read it to help tone down the language before hitting the send button.

“Anger doesn’t solve anything.  It builds nothing, but it can destroy everything”. – unknown

Don’t get me wrong as a leader. There are times you have to be direct with employees for them to improve their work performance. We can’t ignore the situation and let it continue. Have a plan on how to address it.  Write it out and practice what and how to say it. There are also times when you do need to respond immediately and make a quick decision. When possible, take the opportunity to pause and reflect. What is happening around you?  It may change your approach and captivate a great solution.

Discussion Questions:

What are your thoughts about the art of pause?

How will you incorporate it into your leadership style?

Time for Vacation Planning

Spring is upon us!  Now is the time to start planning a vacation. We all need a little time away from work for our mental and physical health.  Okay, let’s do it and come up with a great plan for your ultimate vacation.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Review your calendar before it fills up. What days are available for a week or two?
  • Okay, you have found some days that are open, submit those days for vacation leave to your boss.
  • Set your vacation dates on the calendar and block out those dates.
  • Immediately start thinking about what you would like to do on vacation.
  • What sounds fun, exciting or interesting to you?  Going to a museum, relaxing on the beach, reading a book with a nice breeze, hiking, skiing, boating, fishing, scuba diving, dancing, attending a baseball game, bird watching, zoo, wildlife park, camping, or traveling somewhere you have never been before.
  • Now, it is time to book the travel arrangements and accommodations.  It is important to do it right away, so nothing else can be scheduled for that time.
  • What job functions can you delegate while you are gone?  Start training others for those tasks, so when you are on vacation these things get completed and are done right.  No worrying while you’re gone.  It is being handled.
  • Share your duties with the whole team.  Giving different tasks to several people will ensure they can still perform their own job assignments as well.
  • Communicate to everyone you will be on vacation from this date to this date and you will be unavailable during those dates.
  • Insert the vacation dates on your email notification, voice mail messages and whom to contact while you are out.
  • The most important thing is UNPLUG.  Reframe from checking your work emails or voice messages until you get back.

By enjoying your time off, you will come back to work refreshed, recharged, motivated, inspired and passionate.  Taking a vacation is good for you and everyone around you!

Call to Action:

After returning from vacation, tell me about your vacation; even if it was a “staycation”.  Were you refreshed, motivated and ready to come back to work?  I would love to hear all about it. ~ Patti

Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self-Doubt from Daily Life

Cacti

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The eighth key action step is working on “Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self- Doubt from daily life”.

Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self-Doubt:

Start With Creating Peace, Love and Joy.  When I ask this question:  What do you really want in life?  People have expressed all they really want in their lives is peace and love. How do you find peace and love in your life?  I believe before you can have peace, joy and love in your life. You should reflect peace and love within yourself.

How do you reflect peace?   By realizing, yes, you have made some mistakes and those mistakes sometimes follow you. Everyone makes mistakes and it is time to let go of that baggage which loads you down and forgive yourself. Once you learn to love and respect yourself your heart will open to receive love from others.  You will begin to treat others with love and kindness and love and kindness will circle back to you.  Peace and calmness will come into your life as well as those around you.  Walking away from gossip and speaking bad about others will improve your relationships and discontinue negative thought patterns.

How to Halt Negative Thought Patterns:

To stop those negative thoughts about yourself and others. Begin by obtaining a small journal and writing down all your good qualities and the good qualities of people around you. Make a list of the good qualities you want to reflect in your life.  Anytime you start to feel the self-doubt or negative thoughts. Pull out that small journal and reflect on those words you written and read them.  Perform this exercise to open your heart to receive love and peace within.

Being Confident and Removing Self-Doubt:

Back in January of 2014 I had created this poll.

The number one reason was Self-Doubt or Confidence.

Why do you think Self-Doubt or Confidence was number one?

Why are people afraid to pursue their dreams or aspirations?  Isn’t it better to go after your dreams?  Absolutely!  Have a plan, it will take time and perseverance.  I recall sometime back I had read an article which discussed when people were close to dying they wished they took more chances and didn’t worry about what others thought of them.

Can you imagine how many happy and satisfied people there would be in this world, if they pursued their goals and dreams?

How do you live the life you imagined?

Start with creating an action plan.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you really want in your life?
  • What do you need in your life to accomplish it?
  • What steps will you take?
  • What may prevent you from achieving it?
  • How will you move past those obstacles and achieve what you want?

Right now!  The life you’re leading:

  • Is it acceptable or satisfying to you?
  • Is there something more you want?
  • Can you imagine how different your life would be if you followed these steps to accomplish the life you imagined?

Self-doubt hinders you.  Be passionate, persistent, patient and flexible. Keep moving forward.   It will happen!  Life is an adventure where are you taking yours? – Patti

Muddy Waters

This summer I was sitting by the river watching it flow.  The river was very muddy from the day before rain.  The thought came to me.  We are like a river at times.  Sometimes we are crystal clear, on the right path and other times we are just plain muddy.  In the times of a muddy river we make mistakes, mishaps, miss the path, and even lose relationships.  We get down in the mud and get stuck.   The mud seems to be pulling down hard.  We all get immovable at times and can’t seem to step out of the same old misery.  Sometimes we are so deep we can’t see a way out.  Other times we are on the edge of the mud and are slipping just hanging on by a slimy rock.  Sometimes our feet are just sinking very slowly but we can help ourselves by reaching for a limb.

If you are stuck in that muddy river why not ask for assistance and have the life you really want.  Peace, joy, happiness and love.  It is never too late to climb out of the muddy river.  There is a limb (a coach) wanting to pull you out just reach for it.  The limb is waiting for you with open branches.  Take a chance it is worth the adventure.    ~ Patti

Questions:  What flowing river are you?  Where do you want to be?

Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can’t change. ~ Author Unknown

Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can’t change.  Kiss slowly, play hard, forgive quickly, take chances, give everything and have no regrets.  Life is too short to be anything but happy. ~ Author Unknown

This poem has a lot of meaning to me.  I look at the words and some inspire me and some are hard to live by.  Laughing is good and we all should do more of it. Some of us get so focus we forget to laugh, kiss slowly, play hard, take chances and give everything to these precious moments of life.

A few of these words I sometimes struggle with ~ apologizing when you should, forgive quickly and no regrets.  Yes, I am usually very quick to apologize when I am in the wrong.  What I struggle with is apologizing to someone who has hurt you time and time again and feels you should apologize because they are too stubborn to apologize themselves. The question I ponder is “When is the line crossed to not make amends?”  When you do not apologize, does this mean you haven’t forgiven quickly?  Probably. How do you forgive quickly and move on?

Living life with no regrets.  I truly want this in my life and I am working towards it daily.  There are somethings I wish I could have change in my life, but I have accepted I can’t go back and change them.  So it is time to let go of it and move on.  This poem has great words to live by and I am going to do my best to remember them in my daily walk.  How about you?  I have somethings to work on, as we all probably do.  Be happy and live life to the fullest.  ~ Patti

Question:  Which of these words inspire you and which do you struggle with?

Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments about this poem below.

HAPPINESS is not in our circumstance, but in Ourselves! ~ John B. Sheerin

Happiness is not in our circumstances, but in ourselves.  It is not something we see, like a rainbow, or feel, like the heat of a fire.  Happiness is something we are. ~ John B. Sheerin

I saw this quote today and thought WOW, I know when I see a beautiful sunset or rainbow it brings a smile to my face and joy.  So what is happiness?  A while back I wrote a blog post called What is HAPPINESS?   The blog post discussed the poll results from What are the ingredients of happiness?  at that point in time the poll results were Joy, Love and Peace.  At this moment of writing the poll results have changed to “Joy” being number one and “Love” number two.

The definition of “Happiness” according to Merriam -Webster’s Dictionary is the following:

: the state of being happy, well-being, contentment and joy

: an experience that makes you happy, pleasurable or a satisfying experience

good fortune

The quote above  by John B. Sheerin stating “happiness is in ourselves” I agree with that phrase and believe true happiness does comes from within.  The last part of the quote “happiness is something we are”, I’m not totally sure about this statement.  I would love for this part of the quote to be everyone however there are many people who are not happy within.   As a certified professional coach I work with clients to pursue happiness in all aspects of life.  Many of my happy moments were camping at the lake!

What are your happy moments?

More questions to ponder:
  • What are your thoughts about this quote?
  • Do you think happiness is not in our circumstances, but in ourselves?
  • Do you feel happiness is something we are?
Share your thoughts and answers to the questions in leave a reply below. ~Patti 🙂

Where is your Tranquility?

Where is your Tranquility

Where is your Tranquility?

I was sitting out in my garden patio.  It was so peaceful.  I love looking at the plants, flowers and my little round pond.  The patio has a grape vine over the top of it and this provides shade for the plants and the inside of the patio.  The vine gives just enough light for the plants and the right amount of shade so they don’t burn in the hot Arizona sun.  My garden patio is my calm and tranquil place.  I journal and self reflect there.  It is my happy space.

  • Do you have a place where you go to unwind?
  • Is this place calm and relaxing to you?
  • If so, how often do you take advantage of this space? Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Annually
  • If you don’t, “Why not?”

We all need someplace to think and rejuvenate.  Are you taking time for you?   Would scheduling some time help?  Is this something to consider for creating balance in your life?  If you don’t have a place, imagine where to find one?  It could be anywhere you feel at peace.  Why not consider this and let me know how it made a difference in your life.  I just love my garden patio and it creates tranquility in my life!  How about you?  ~Patti
