❤️ Why are we so hard on ourselves when we make a mistake?

Mistakes happen, and owning up to them makes you a better person. Hiding mistakes or blaming others isn’t good for your reputation or your relationships. For some people, the fear of making a mistake can paralyze them to the point of not taking any action at all.

Here are some questions to ponder:

❤️ Why do you think people are afraid to fess up to their mistakes?

❤️ Is it about looking bad in front of others?

❤️ Is it that if they admit to making a mistake, they may lose a job or, worse, someone they love or admire?

❤️ Is it fear of being embarrassed, mocked, or teased?

❤️ What are some mistakes that are better left unsaid? Are there situations that you shouldn’t confess?

Making mistakes helps us learn what not to do, grow more knowledgeable, and become successful. As the saying goes, I’ve tried that, done that, and I learned from it.

❤️ How do you get over and move on from a mistake?

Patti wrote a blog post in November of 2019 on workplace shaming called “Don’t Be That (Guy) Person!” “Is shaming an effective management strategy?” Listeners – We would love to hear your thoughts on these questions.

How can these circumstances of overcoming the fear of mistakes change and having the courage to admit it?

When making a mistake and getting caught, why is it hard for some to admit it and apologize?

Getting it wrong happens, but sometimes our inner critic can beat us up to the point of being paralyzed or afraid to take action. What can we do?

❤️ Self-Reflect on what happened.  What can I do to fix this situation?  Can I fix it?  What can I do differently next time?

❤️ Journal about it. Continue to write and get out of all those emotions. The disappointment, hurt, shame, your inner critic, etc.

❤️ Acknowledge the mistake and be humble.

❤️ Apologize; keep it simple and sincere. I am sorry.

❤️ Accept the consequences and do what it takes to fix it or make it better when possible.

❤️ Recite positive Affirmations and reflect on all the good things you have accomplished.

❤️ Turn that negative experience into a positive by learning from it.

❤️ Everyone makes mistakes. This is how we become a better person from these experiences.

Achieving Balance in Your Life

Finding balance in your life can be challenging to do, especially during these stressful days. There are family and work obligations, plus extra-curricular activities for your kids and unexpected situations. It’s no wonder that you’re feeling out of balance and overwhelmed! 

There are things you can do to achieve balance in your life. Below are great starting points to get you on the road to a well-balanced life.

  1. Start using a central calendar for every member of your family. 

This calendar can be a shared calendar online using Google Calendar, or it can be a paper calendar stuck on the fridge. Either way, have each family member write their activities on the calendar and be sure to include the time, location, and mode of transportation. This way, nothing gets missed, and you can plan your schedule accordingly. 

If there are conflicting activities, this is a good time to teach your family about compromises and the give and take in relationships. There are ways to work things out, and a little lesson in selflessness never hurts anyone.

  1. Take a look at your daily routine. Are there activities you can cut out to make your life more balanced?

In this society of rush-rush, convenience, and got-to-have-it-all or do-it-all, you may be feeling overwhelmed by all the extracurricular activities you’re involved in. As you look at each activity, ask yourself:

  • Is this activity necessary for my well being?
  • Can I live without being involved in this activity?
  • Is this improving my life, or is this overwhelming me?
  • Is this helping others, or is it purely for self-gratification?
  • Is this going to help me achieve my career, family, and personal goals?

The answers to these questions will help you clean up your schedule and continue to enjoy the things that are really important to you and your family.

  1. Establish a daily routine. 

Routines help us stay on task and get things done without procrastination. Without a daily routine, you tend to wander aimlessly, instead of engaging in tasks that take you down the right path toward your goals.

If you work from home, it’s easy to wander away from your daily routine because you can set your own schedule, so it’s especially important to have a routine and work diligently at sticking to it. Whether you work out of the home or you’re a stay at home mom or dad, a daily schedule is vital. Following an agenda will help you achieve your daily, monthly, and yearly goals.

  1. Set goals for yourself, your family, and your career. 

Without goals, you have nothing to work for, and you’ll feel lost without purpose.  Talk about making things feel out of balance! Some worthwhile goals to reach for might be:

  • Losing weight
  • Starting your own business 
  • A new house
  • A new car
  • Establishing a budget and sticking to it
  • A pay raise
  • A promotion
  • Learning a new skill or trade
  • Writing a book

Those are just a few ideas to get you started thinking about all the possibilities available to help you achieve more balance in your life.

Balance in life is something that requires constant attention and resilience. Don’t let the busyness of life get in the way of living your life to the fullest. You can accomplish it when you work at it. Keep trying, and you’ll be amazed at the stability that comes your way.

Create a Better Work-Life Balance and Get Your Life Back

Do you feel like you’re so busy that you don’t have time for a life? Do you feel as if you’re constantly running behind?

There are ways you can learn to negotiate your work life, so you become more productive. 

Once you become more organized at work, you can more fully enjoy your time away from work as well. If you’re not stressing about your job, you can relax when you’re at home and live a more balanced life.

How can you be more productive? What can you do to improve the quality of your life?

Here are a few ideas to find work-life balance:

  1. Slow Down. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and it seems like you’re running in circles, sometimes the best thing you can do is to slow down. 

Take the time to prioritize. Going faster doesn’t mean you’re more productive or that you accomplish more things. Doing things right the first time will save time in the long run.

  1. Stop Procrastinating. There are certain things about any job that is mundane. If you take the time to do the tedious parts of your job, you can breathe a sigh of relief sooner.

    Schedule an afternoon to finish those pesky tasks so you can move on to more interesting (or even fun!) things.
  2. Share The Work. You don’t have to do everything! Recruit some help from your fellow employees or family members.

    Delegate responsibilities, and you’ll get everything done in a timely manner. This facilitates teamwork and makes everyone feel like they’ve made a contribution. It also gives you some relief while your helpers gain a sense of accomplishment. 
  1. Simplify. Don’t make things complicated. As humans, we tend to make extra work for ourselves, even if it’s unnecessary. 

Why reinvent the wheel?

If something works, don’t try to fix it.

Always remember the KISS method: Keep It Simple Silly. 

  1. De-clutter. Streamlining your workspace helps you focus on your work.

Arrange your desk so you can reach what you need the moment you need it. Sifting through multiple piles costs you valuable time, causes frustration, and can even prevent you from completing important tasks!

  1. Learn To Say No. When your workload is maxed out, be assertive about saying no. Help your boss understand that your plate is full and not insubordinate. 

Stay within your scheduled hours. Once you’ve learned to keep work from cutting into your personal time, you will become more empowered to enjoy life outside the office walls.

  1. Implement Technology. Use technology to your advantage. A small-time investment in entering information, such as addresses and other contact information, into a computer system can save volumes of time later. 

Once you’ve implemented a system, it’s much easier to make changes to the information and stay current. It also makes it easier to keep up with detailed customer information.

  1. Eliminate Distractions. If your personal life interferes with your job, set some boundaries. Be firm when you have work to finish.

Leave your cell phone in the car or switch it off during work hours.

Discourage frequent personal calls or visits.

Delay socializing with co-workers until your work is done.

Once you’ve learned to streamline your workday, you’ll find that you no longer dread going to work and bringing it all home! Imagine knowing that you’re ready to start your day instead of playing catch up from yesterday.

Some say work-life balance is not achievable, while others say you can. What is a balanced life, really? It is what you choose it to be. There are going to be times in our lives where we think it can never be achievable. The question may come – How do you stay balanced when you feel everything is crashing down around you?

❤️ It may be time to step back and say enough and refocus on what truly matters.

If you come from a life where you are expected to be serious, play can be difficult for you. Maybe you don’t allow yourself to play; maybe you need permission to play. Maybe you need a purpose for play. So give yourself a purpose for the play. The purpose for play could be “I’m stimulating my creative mind” or “discovering lateral thinking and new ways of coming up with solutions”.

❤️ What will it add to your life?

This can be a great way to encourage play as an opportunity to invigorate your life.

Life will be chaotic, hectic, and disappointing, but having some strategies will soften the experience. How we react to it is what determines happiness. Put some of these suggestions into practice and don’t forget to step back, breathe, enjoy your life, schedule playtime with family and friends, and let go of what does not matter. Live life to the fullest!

5 Ways to Find Inner Balance in a Hyper-Connected World

The modern world is always on. From phones that never stop ringing to email inboxes flooded with messages, it’s hard to find peace. You’re overwhelmed, tired, and trying to keep up. Fortunately, there’s a better way to find balance in your life.

Try these strategies to coexist with technology and still have inner peace:

1. Focus on creating a healthy relationship with technology. Between work, family, and friends, you may be online frequently. Your job may require you to use email, or your kids may text you updates. How do you find a balance amid the technology?

Craft a relationship that is based on intent. Mindless surfing online can waste your time, so ensure you have a definite purpose when you use technology. All of your online actions need a reason.

2. Live with technology instead of for it. Technology and being connected doesn’t have to absorb your entire life.

Keep in mind that technology is a tool. Avoid making it the focus of your day or life.

3. Disconnect on a frequent basis. It’s crucial to take breaks from always being connected to everyone through your phone, email, and social media.

Take a tech break each week. Experts recommend setting aside the weekends for spending time with family and friends. Avoid surfing online, sending text messages, or uploading photos. Instead, interact with real people in the real world.

It’s important to warn your connections ahead of time so you don’t cause concern when you suddenly “disappear.” They’ll get used to you taking weekends and vacations away from technology.

4. Manage your connections. Do you really need to keep up with every person from your old school days? How many times do you need to check your social media accounts for new messages?

It’s important to find a balance between keeping up to date with your connections and always being available. Of course, you want to stay in touch, but it doesn’t have to be an hourly issue.

Try limiting the number of connections in your life to those that are important to you.

Although it may hurt some feelings, consider “unfollowing” some people on social media, so you don’t have to be part of their drama anymore. Do what you can to maintain a stress-free social circle.

5. Partake in activities that reduce stress. A hyper-connected world can make you feel on edge. It can increase stress and anxiety. It can also make you feel that you always have to be available to do everything. 

Schedule some alone time each day. The solitude will give you a chance to reflect, plan, de-stress, and re-energize. Try yoga, meditation, journaling, or keeping a diary.

Pursue activities that make you feel peaceful and calm. Whether you hike in a park or dance in your living room, relax and disconnect from the world for a moment.

You can discover inner balance despite living in a hyper-connected world. Make these strategies daily habits and enjoy greater peace.
