Leadership Interview

A while back I was interviewed by one of my coachees  on Leadership.  I would like to share with you the interview. 🙂

  2. How do you inspire a vision? Answer:  Sharing your vision consistently, constantly and the progress of the vision.
  3. Do you or have you challenged the process? In what way? Answer:  Many times, presenting the challenge in a professional way and the process with management, staff and having a solution for a better way.  Asking to implement it and why.  Taking the risk and being responsible for it if it fails.  Learn from your mistakes and always keep trying to improve.
  4. How do you enable other to act?  Answer: Communicating, coaching and leading by example.  Networking and showing the way.
  5. How do you or do you encourage the heart of your followers? Building heart felt relationships is the key to building trust and followers.  Be honest and open and letting others be open and honest even when you don’t like what is being said.  Self-reflection and others sharing self-reflection.  It takes time but it is worth the investment.
  6. How do you effectively communicate? Answer:  Asking questions, reflecting what was said and making sure you are really listened and understood what was said.
  7. Is it difficult to create a motivational environment? Answer:  Yes and no.  It depends on the environment and what behaviors that have been acceptable.  Everything takes time and investment.  Praising people when they do a good job.  Coaching them when improvement is needed.  Being honest and open about things addressing concerns and sharing accomplishments.
  8. How do you manage performance? Answer:  I motivate within.  I have coaches and mentors in areas of where I need to improve.  They help me with self-reflection and to be motivated in areas that are challenging and hold me accountable for the goals I set.
  9. How do you deal with underperformance? What are the special techniques you use?  Answer:  Coaching is so powerful.  Discussing with the employee the areas they are underperforming and coaching towards solutions to succeed.  Setting up goals and ways to succeed.  One on one meetings weekly to discuss progress.  What is working what is not.  Try different ways of communications and training until they find what clicks.
  10. How do you know when it is your duty to act? Answer:  When someone is struggling, complacent, lacking motivation, bad attitude towards job or others.  It is time to find out what is causing it.  Is it time to give them a new project, some additional training or setting new  goals.  Asking questions  at the one on one session helps with a plan of action.  I really enjoyed the questions she asked me and the interview.  My wish is this interview inspired you in your daily walk as a Leader. ~ Patti 🙂

February is the month to reflect “LOVE”

What does love mean to you?  The word “LOVE” means something different to each of us.

The dictionary defines “LOVE”:

  •  A feeling of strong or constant affection for a person
  • Attraction that includes sexual desire: the strong affection felt by people who have a romantic relationship
  • A person you love in a romantic way

This month let’s express “LOVE” and not just on Valentine’s Day!

Take a chance and use different ways to communicate to others what they mean to you.

Through a phone call, write a letter, send a text message, email, send a card or in person tell someone; how you feel about them.  These are the people who have made an impact in your life and they should know it.

Here are some ways for you to express those feelings:

•             I am so glad to have you as a friend!

•             Thank you!

•             It’s great working with you!

•             Thanks for being my friend!

•             Thanks for always being there for me!

•             I am so glad you are my co-worker!

•             You are a great boss!

•             Thanks for your help on this project!

•             Thanks for being the best Dad or Mom!

•             I’m so glad you are in my life!

•             Give some flowers, a plant, candy or cookies

•             Take someone to a movie, lunch or dinner

•             Buy someone a cup of coffee

•             Make a small gift

•             Send a photo of you and the other person together

•             Send a card “Just thinking of you”

•             Wash someone’s car

•             Do something on the “honey do” list

This may not be something you usually do.  Take the leap.  Step up to the challenge.  Even if you don’t get a response back from the other person, you reached out and did something. You may be surprised by the results.  My wish for you is to have an amazing month of giving from the heart! – Patti

Peace and Love

What do people really want in life?  Others have expressed all they really want in their life is peace and love. How do you find peace and love in your life?  I believe before you can have peace, joy and love in your life. You should reflect peace and love within yourself.

How do you reflect peace?   By realizing, yes, you have made some mistakes and those mistakes sometimes follow you. Everyone makes mistakes and it is time to let go of that baggage which loads you down and forgive yourself. Once you learn to love and respect yourself your heart will open to receive love from others.  You will begin to treat others with love and kindness. The love and kindness will bring peace and calmness into your life as well as those around you.

To stop those negative thoughts about yourself. Begin by writing down all your good qualities. Anytime you start to feel the self-doubt or negative thoughts. Reflect on those words you written and read them.  Perform this exercise to open your heart to receive love and peace within.

Jump-Start the New Year with a positive GOAL to accomplish!

Think about and strategize on pursuing the goal.

Write or type your goal onto a calendar, a to-do list, a vision board, a white board, screen saver and journal to continually to reflect on it.

Intentionally devote time and energy towards accomplishing it.

Ask yourself what do I need to do to accomplish this goal?

What steps am I going to take to make this a reality?

What is my plan of action to start?

Do I need more education or training?

How am I going to stay focused and what steps I am going to take to achieve this?

Do I need a coach for accountability to attain this goal?

What is my target date to accomplish this?

By starting the year with a goal to reach, this inspires a sense of purpose in your life.  When you achieve it you feel a sense of happiness and joy! – Patti

Life is like hiking a MOUNTAIN!

Life is like hiking a mountain. Sometimes you’re moving forward. Sometimes you’re moving backwards. Sometimes you side step. Sometimes the trail is rough and rocky. Sometimes the trail is just plain flat. Sometimes there are curves that strike you when you least expect it. Sometimes there is shifting sand. Sometimes you feel like you are going round in circles and just don’t know how to stop the detour. You may have lost your way and need a compass (a coach) to get you back on the right path. Other times you’re moving upward and everything is going good. Then there are times you are physically and emotionally exhausted and want to give up, but you continue to move forward because you see the peak in the distance. This gives you just enough inspiration to keep moving forward.

You may stumble over rocks (obstacles). You get bruised but you pick yourself up, brush yourself off and keep moving forward. There are times when you start sliding down the mountain but you continue to push upward. You finally reach the top (your goal). You look all around and down below. You see the beauty and realize it was worth all of your struggles through the rough rocky terrain. You cherish and savor this moment with a smile. You have clarity and recognize it was worth the pain and sacrifice to get there. As you reflect on this journey you now know it was well worth every precious step.

Living life without Regrets

A few years ago my Dad and I were sitting outside admiring the beautiful sunset.  He had recently retired.  He turned to me and said if I die tomorrow I have done everything I wanted in life and I have no regrets.   There were times when I was growing up I had thought my Dad was being selfish because our lives revolved around him but now I realize my Dad had lived his life to the fullest.

Looking back at life there are many times when I have had some type of regret.  Not telling my childhood friend that I bowled with how much his kind manner meant to me and walking out that door of the bowling alley at sixteen without the courage to tell him that he was the only reason why I came to that particular bowling alley week after week.  I may not ever have a chance to tell him that he did make a difference in my life and I enjoyed bowling with him because he was kind to me and the other boys I bowled with continually teased me or played pranks.

When a junior high school friend called me up out of the blue in high school and said let’s get together sometime and that sometime never came and we lost contact.  I had missed an important moment of friendship that may not ever come again because I didn’t say why don’t you come over now?

Seize the moment and don’t be afraid of rejection.  If you do get rejected at least you know the truth and never have to wonder “what if”.  The “what if’s” cause regret.  I believe regret is much more painful than seizing the moment, taking a chance, and following through on something that may be disappointing than always wondering “what if” I had spoken up and said “you are the only reason I come here week after week” or “sure come on over right now” I probably wouldn’t have any feelings of regret towards these two life learning experiences.

I found through experiencing life we need to tell people we care about them because if we don’t that day may never come.  Take time to tell your family and friends what they mean to you.  Seize the moment and live your life to the fullest without regret.

Live, laugh, dream, and love to the fullest!

What is a gift to me? by Patti Oskvarek

A gift to me is not always a tangible thing.  A gift is having true friends that love you no matter what you did in the past.  A gift is finding an old friend you haven’t been in contact with for many years and it is like you never lost contact.  A gift is having a friend to share your hopes and dreams.  A gift is laughing with a loved one or a dear friend.  A gift is having a pet that loves you unconditionally and is there for you when you get home from a rough day at work and is so happy to see you.  A gift is finding your true love.  A gift is walking on the beach with a special loved one hand in hand.   A gift is watching the sunset or sunrise with that special someone.  A gift is looking up at the stars or the moon and seeing God’s creation and smiling at the awesome beauty.  A gift is sitting by a lake or stream with a peaceful easy feeling.

A gift is having children and watching them grow up into responsible adults.  A gift is seeing that look on someone’s face and knowing they need a hug and reaching out to hug them.  A gift is a smile when someone truly needs to see that smile and smiles back.    A gift is giving a salute or thank you to a Veteran who serviced our country to give us freedom to enjoy this wonderful land.   A gift is being there when a love one takes their last breath.   A gift is having faith that the Lord will get you through that tragedy or circumstance that you just don’t think you have the strength to handle.

A gift is saying encouraging words to a love one, friend or co-worker when it is desperately needed instead of tearing them down.  A gift is taking your son or daughter to lunch as a just because. A gift is being able to love someone unconditionally when they have failed to live up to your expectations.  A gift is reminiscing about that funny or embarrassing moment with friends or family and laughing so hard you’re crying.  Those are true gifts to me.

The little things are gifts.  Gifts don’t have to be that big diamond ring, a big fancy house, an expensive car in the driveway or a dozen red roses for every special occasion.  The most precious gift you can give someone is your love and quality time.

My wish for all of you is to find that special gift and give it to that special someone this holiday season.  Just think if we all took the time to realize and appreciate those special gifts in our lives we could change our lives and the world we live in. – Patti
