Networking with Ease

Sunrise

For some networking is very uncomfortable.  Is being at a large networking event overwhelming for you?  Does introducing yourself and talking to others you don’t know hard?  Do you feel like you have to sell yourself and your business and you don’t like it?  Does this describe you when networking?

Okay, let’s discuss some strategies on how to network with ease.

  • Find networking groups that interest you and your type of business.  Then schedule it on your calendar and start to prepare to go.  Do a little research about the networking event so you know what to expect.
  • Write a quick little speech to introduce yourself and your business.  Memorize and constantly practice it.   This way it flows out naturally and with ease.
  • Think about what you want from this networking opportunity and make a plan of action.
  •  Have questions practiced to ask others and some answers ready to reply back.
  • Smile when speaking with others and be interested in what they are saying.
  • Have business cards and brochures available to give out.
  • Follow up with the people you really connected with at the event.  Follow up may include via email or connecting with them on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.

I have personally met a couple of people at networking groups and we have become good friends.  I still keep in touch with others I have met through networking via Facebook and LinkedIn.  You just never know who you might meet when networking.  Practice your little speech and remind yourself that networking is a great opportunity for you and your business.

Self-Care to Improve Health and Wellness

IMG_0489

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The tenth key action step is working on Self-Care to Improve Health and Wellness.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is any intentional actions you take to care for your physical, social, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being.

Why is self-care so important?

Self-care is important for your physical well being, mental state, nourishing your soul and is just good for your overall health in general. Without self-care you and your relationships with others can suffer.

Here are some tips to incorporate Self-Care:

  • Eat healthy meals
  • Drinking plenty of water daily
  • Get enough sleep ~ a reasonable guideline for most people should be between 7-10 hours of sleep per night.
  • Doing some kind of exercise for at least 20 minutes daily
  • Get medical and dental check ups
  • Reduce stress ~ relax, pray, mediate, listen to relaxing music, color, journal,  be creative, participate in a hobby, make a vision board, go outdoors and take a hike or walk, take up a sports activity, go for a ride on a bicycle or motorcycle
  • Listen to audio tapes, read a book, read a magazine, do a word search puzzle or watch a movie
  • Practice gratitude
  • Set healthy and functional boundaries; do not over book yourself and be comfortable to saying no
  • Spend quality time with good friends, your spouse/partner, your children and your pets

By adding a few of these tips it will help you stay balanced and less stressed overall.

Self-Reflection Questions:

What is your favorite activity to relax?

Which one of these tips will you try first?

Comments are always welcome and please share it with your colleagues and on your social networks!

Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self-Doubt from Daily Life

Cacti

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The eighth key action step is working on “Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self- Doubt from daily life”.

Removing Gossip, Negative Thoughts and Self-Doubt:

Start With Creating Peace, Love and Joy.  When I ask this question:  What do you really want in life?  People have expressed all they really want in their lives is peace and love. How do you find peace and love in your life?  I believe before you can have peace, joy and love in your life. You should reflect peace and love within yourself.

How do you reflect peace?   By realizing, yes, you have made some mistakes and those mistakes sometimes follow you. Everyone makes mistakes and it is time to let go of that baggage which loads you down and forgive yourself. Once you learn to love and respect yourself your heart will open to receive love from others.  You will begin to treat others with love and kindness and love and kindness will circle back to you.  Peace and calmness will come into your life as well as those around you.  Walking away from gossip and speaking bad about others will improve your relationships and discontinue negative thought patterns.

How to Halt Negative Thought Patterns:

To stop those negative thoughts about yourself and others. Begin by obtaining a small journal and writing down all your good qualities and the good qualities of people around you. Make a list of the good qualities you want to reflect in your life.  Anytime you start to feel the self-doubt or negative thoughts. Pull out that small journal and reflect on those words you written and read them.  Perform this exercise to open your heart to receive love and peace within.

Being Confident and Removing Self-Doubt:

Back in January of 2014 I had created this poll.

The number one reason was Self-Doubt or Confidence.

Why do you think Self-Doubt or Confidence was number one?

Why are people afraid to pursue their dreams or aspirations?  Isn’t it better to go after your dreams?  Absolutely!  Have a plan, it will take time and perseverance.  I recall sometime back I had read an article which discussed when people were close to dying they wished they took more chances and didn’t worry about what others thought of them.

Can you imagine how many happy and satisfied people there would be in this world, if they pursued their goals and dreams?

How do you live the life you imagined?

Start with creating an action plan.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you really want in your life?
  • What do you need in your life to accomplish it?
  • What steps will you take?
  • What may prevent you from achieving it?
  • How will you move past those obstacles and achieve what you want?

Right now!  The life you’re leading:

  • Is it acceptable or satisfying to you?
  • Is there something more you want?
  • Can you imagine how different your life would be if you followed these steps to accomplish the life you imagined?

Self-doubt hinders you.  Be passionate, persistent, patient and flexible. Keep moving forward.   It will happen!  Life is an adventure where are you taking yours? – Patti

Connecting with Others and Building Friendships

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The seventh key action step is working on connecting with others and building friendships.

I have heard people say there seems to be a trend happening of people lacking a connection to others. More and more people appear to becoming distance, isolated and lonely.  Humans are made to be social, crave friendships, and want to feel accepted and loved.

What can you do today to connect to others?

If we want to have lasting friendships we have to be willing to open ourselves up to the possibility of failure and to trust people even when we are not sure we can trust.  How can we break down those walls and connect with others to have lasting friendships?  Building friendships is hard work but well worth every minute of working on it.

Do you think there would be less lonely miserable people if we reach out and help others by building bridges instead of constructing walls?

To keep relationships going, make an effort to reach out by contacting and responding back.

If someone takes the time to call, send an email, instant message or text you respond back.  People who do not respond back appear to be rude, self-absorbed or come a cross that you aren’t important to them.  This may not be the case at all but that could be how it is taken.  Respond back even if it is “I got your message.  Thank you!”  To keep good relationships with friends, associates, clients, family and others in your life make some sort of effort or people may give up on you.

We all get busy with work and personal lives.  Sometimes we feel overwhelmed.   When we can take a few minutes every day to reply back to others it strengthens our friendships and happiness. ~ Patti

Questions-  Is this a subject we all may want to improve upon?  How does it make you feel when others don't respond back to you?

Daily Forgiveness Practices

Forgiveness

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The fifth key action step is working on daily forgiveness practices and forgiving yourself and others.

This is a difficult topic even for me.  I have my own battles with forgiveness.  It is not easy and I continue to keep working on it daily.  There are some relationships that may not ever be where I want them to be and forgiveness is a work in progress.  It is important to continue being positive and forgiveness will follow.  Like the old saying goes “Forgive others, not because they deserve forgiveness but because you deserve peace.” ~ John Lockwood Huie

How do we forgive when someone has hurt us deeply and we comprehend that they will probably not ever apologize?  They may think what they said or did was justified.  They may think they did nothing wrong.  They may think they have every right to behave in that way.  They may be too selfish or self-centered to even realize they hurt you.  Or they may have the attitude, just don’t care and going to say whatever they feel without any regards to others feelings.  They may have the philosophy “Life is short, so say what you feel” and use it as an excuse to say hurtful things.

Forgiveness maybe even harder, when it is a family member.  The holidays and family special occasions are more difficult when these circumstances are in the mix.  These gatherings don’t feel joyful, it feels more like sadness, anger, anxiety and overwhelm.  Sometimes family members take sides and the hurt keeps hurting.  There may be rude intentional remarks towards you or other family members.  Conversations move toward your past mistakes instead of encouraging you or a happy to see you.  So how do we move past these situations and be able to forgive?

Okay, now let’s talk about some strategies to help deal with moving forward and not letting these occasions open up those old feelings of pain, anger, anxiety or an emotional breakdown and turn them into happy memorable times.

  • Listen to happy, soothing, spiritual or religious music when feelings of unforgiveness start to surface within you.
  • Think happy thoughts and find something fun to do.  A hobby, an art project, a sport activity, go for a walk or run.
  • Practice meditation and/or pray of “Letting Go”.
  • Use positive affirmations daily as well as before, during and after family gatherings.
  • Imagine yourself having a great time at the gathering and you have changed your perception of the unforgiven person as if they are someone you truly liked being around and admire.
  • Watch your reactions and triggers when you assume other people’s motives.  Become aware of those negative thoughts and/or assumptions, push them away with positive thinking. When there is continual negative thoughts and/or assumptions this will keep you stuck in the past.  Thinking with positive thoughts and action steps is a great way towards forgiveness.
  • When faced in a situation with the person who engages in being rude and demeaning towards you, calmly excuse yourself from the conversation, walk away and find someone who you like being around to uplift your spirits.  Smile and laugh with them to ease  the tension or apprehension you may be feeling.
  • After the occasion think about only all the good conversations you experienced and any special things that happened.  Journal about all these good things that happened and reflect on only them.

Being angry and unforgiving only hurts you.  Let go of the unforgiveness inside you and move towards experiencing peace, love, joy and true happiness in life. ~ Patti

Another saying:  “I believe that life is short, and there is too much time wasted bearing grudges, and I like to move on”. ~ Sam Taylor-Johnson

Self-Reflection Question:

What action steps will you do to achieve forgiveness in your life?

Acknowledging and Thanking Others

Yellow Flowers

Acknowledging and Thanking Others

Three weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The second key action step was acknowledging and thanking others in our daily life.

Why is this important in our life?  I feel there is not enough kindness, thankfulness and acknowledging each other in this world today.  A lot of people are so focused on climbing the corporate ladder or only into their own wants and needs they tend to forget about what is really important in life.  Their relationships with others.

Who is going to remember how you climbed up that corporate ladder other than the people you abused and manipulated along the way?  Is that how you want to be remembered?  Are you going to have anyone who truly cares about you when you are no longer at the top and forced to retire?

What lives did you wreck to get there?   Where you really happy alone at the top?   Did you make people’s lives miserable.  Do you really trust anyone?   Are you always watching your back because you are afraid someone will betray you or even worse take your job?  What did you truly gain?  Did you really have anyone who truly loved you or did they just use you for your status?  Where are they now?

Something to think about:
When I was a new Supervisor my Manager and I were talking about leadership.  She was telling me about her career path and how important it is to treat your employees respectfully because someday they could be your boss.  I really appreciated her sharing this with me because you never know who will be your leader and relationships are the key to success.

The song “Lying Eyes” by the legendary band the “Eagles” is a good reflection of having it all but still it was not enough.

Maybe it is time to do some self-reflection before it is too late.

  • How do you treat others as a leader, co-worker, friend, parent, partner or spouse?
  • Are you really paying attention on what is happening around you?
  • Are you too busy dealing with work and clawing your way to the top?
  • What really truly matters in life?  Example: Your job or your family?
  • How do you speak to others?  Example:  Is it demanding or polite?
  • When was the last time you really had a good laugh with someone?
  • Or truly had a good conversation with someone and really listened to them?
  • When was the last time you gave your full attention to someone instead of on your iPad or iPhone?
  • When was the last time you actually said something nice about a colleague or your boss?

If these questions hit a nerve.  It may be time to do some more self-reflecting.  I know it hit a nerve with me.

  • When did you lose the interpersonal skills?
  • What made you become hard and cold?
  • Where is the old you?  The fun, loving, caring, and adventurous person?
  • What do you truly want in life?
  • Are you where you want to be?

This week I would like all the readers of this blog post to truly self-reflect on these questions.  Which questions were hard for you to look at within yourself?

My challenge for you this week is to compliment, acknowledge, recognize or praise someone in your life at work and at home.  Then really reflect on it.

  • Did it change the environment around you?  Was it more enjoyable?
  • What was the reaction you saw?  Did you see a smile?  Did you smile?
  • Did it make a difference to that person?
  • Did it make a difference in you?

My wish is this blog post will inspire more joy, peace and better working relationships in your daily life. ~ Patti

Look up and see LIFE!

Look up

What is around YOU?

Two weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  One of the key action steps was putting gratitude into our life and actions.

The other day I read a post from actor Keanu Reeves.  It was absolutely beautiful about seeing life around you.  Here is what he said about a photo of him and the background of a busy city and everyone rushing around:

“You see these people behind me? They are rushing to work and not paying attention to anything. Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to take the time out to enjoy the beauty in life. It’s like we’re zombies. Look up and take your head phones out. Say Hi to someone you see and maybe give a hug to someone who looks like they’re hurting. Help out someone. You have to live every day like it’s your last. What people don’t know about me is that I had depression a couple of years back. I never told anyone about it. I had to fight my way out of depression. The person who was holding me back from my happiness was ME. Every day is precious so let’s treat it like that. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so live today! I hope you share this post to spread love this holiday.” ~ Keanu Reeves

So many people are lonely and/or depressed.  Reaching out with a hello, a smile or hug could really change their day for the better.  We make ourselves so busy we lose sight of what is really important in life.  Look up, enjoy life and others.

I also read this wonderful story a few days ago and I don’t know who wrote it but I thought I would share:

“One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

After their return from the trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “It showed me just how poor we really are.”

What a great perspective.  Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession. It is all based on one’s perspective.  Sometimes it takes the perspective of a child to remind us what’s important.” ~ Unknown

Some people are not thankful for what they have and are wanting what others have.  They are not grateful for the love ones they have in their life and are too busy wanting more instead of enjoying what they have.

The moral of these two stories is to be grateful, enjoy what you have and what is around you.  Be kind and love others.  Quit comparing yourself to others and appreciate what you have because what someone else has may not be right for you.  Enjoy life to the fullest. ~ Patti 🙂

Self-reflection questions:

  • What are you grateful for in your life?
  • How are you going to show kindness towards others?
  • How are you going to stop comparing yourself to others?
  • What steps are you going to take to enjoy life?

Feel free to share your answers to the questions or your thoughts about the blog post in the leave a reply box below .
