What Motivates You?

What is motivation?

According to the dictionary MOTIVATION means the following:

1. the act or an instance of motivating

2. desire to do; interest or drive

3. incentive or inducement

I truly believe that motivation comes from within the person.  If they want it, they will commit and go after it.

Why is commitment so important?

When you are committed in doing something, then you are driven to get it.  People can be lead towards something, that doesn’t mean they will act on it.  It could be the best thing for them, if they don’t see it, or want it, they won’t act on it.  Wanting it leads to being motivated to get it.

Questions to Get Motivated:

Do you really want it?

How badly do you want it?

Why do you want it?

What does it mean to you to get it?

Are you willing to make sacrifices to obtain it?

What are the potential obstacles?

How will you overcome them?

What will your life look like when you get it?

Are you motivated yet?  If not, what will get you motivated?  Write these questions and answers down.  Reflect on them daily.  Dream about them.  Stay positive and focused on what you want.  Your thoughts are the key to success and staying motivated.  Don’t give up when you face difficulties.  Come up with solutions to get around the obstacles and just keep going until you get it!

2016 Reflection: What worked, what didn’t and what is worth trying again in 2017

Here we are at the end of 2016.  Wow, how fast it traveled. Now, it is time to self-reflect about the year.

What transpired in your life this year?

What changes did you make?

What did you accomplished?

What positive actions did you make?

Did you achieve your goals?

What worked?

What didn’t?

Was it a good year?

What happened to make it a good or a bad year for you?

What will you change in 2017?

What is worth trying again?

What would you like to accomplish in 2017?

Life is sometimes full of challenges, obstacles and unknowns, however if we have something to strive for everyday, it gives us purpose.  With a purpose, we have something to look forward to, even when those challenges become overwhelming. It is worth every moment when we know our life purpose.  What is yours? ~ Patti

Arizona Hiking

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year with the cooler temperatures.  Cooler weather for me means it is hiking season.  Hiking is a great way to relieve stress.  I enjoy hiking in Arizona because it is so diverse in vegetation and elevations.  You can hike throughout the year depending on where you go within the state.  Let me tell you a little bit about hiking and the benefits of getting outdoors in nature.

Hiking on 2-18-13 with Patrick 043

Hiking Etiquette:

  1.  Follow and stay on the trails.  The paths are designed to preserve the natural vegetation, keep the area beautiful and for hikers to know their way.
  2. Keep to the right on the path so other hikers can pass.
  3. Pass on the left and announce yourself with “hello”.  When passing stay on the path.  Bikers yield to Hikers.  Hikers and Bikers yield to Horses.  When in a hiking group hike single file.
  4.  Hikers going uphill are given the right away over hikers going downhill.
  5. Pack in and pack out.  Carry your litter out.  Bring a plastic bag to carry your litter inside your back pack.

What to take on a day hike:

  1. Back pack
  2. Bring plenty of bottle water or hydration pack filled with water
  3. Small first-aid kit
  4. Small bottle of sun screen
  5. Small packages of snacks and lunch items
  6. Thin lite weight Pancho in case it rains
  7. A charged cell phone and a compass.  Most smart phones have a compass.
  8. Small flashlight and extra batteries
  9. Small survival knife
  10. Small hand sanitizer
  11.  Matches or lighter
  12. Map of the trail

What to wear:

  1.  Hiking boots
  2. Thick socks
  3. Layered clothes depending on the weather and climate changes
  4. Sun glasses
  5. Hat

Plan your hiking route ahead of time and always tell someone else, where you are going in case of a emergency.  It is a good idea to hike with a partner for safety reasons.

Small Steps

Here is a list of some of my favorite places for a day hike:

Hiking at Butcher Jones 11-12 013

The benefits of taking a hike:

Hiking gets your blood pumping, the body moving and being outdoors with nature has a calming influence on the mind and spirit.

Take away:

Hiking outdoors has lots of benefits.  Beautiful locations, the sceneries, fresh air, wildlife, birds chirping, and water rushing.  It is relaxing and calms the soul.  Gives you time to enjoy what is around you and forget about everything else.  On each trail, path and hike you see the beauty and feel at peace.  In today’s world we all need to see the beauty around us, have some calm peaceful moments and spend more time appreciating nature as well as each other.  Just think, what a difference life would be if we each took a little more time enjoying what wonders are around us and go for a hike!

Deskercise Tips

Now that summer is here and it is heating up, the motivation to get away from your desk and take a walk outside may not be very appealing when it is very hot.  However, for better health and your sanity, it is important to get away from your office desk periodically or at least take a few moments to stretch and get your blood circulating.

Here are some tips to get your body moving, blood circulating, and reduce stress: Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Take a 15-minute walk around the office.

If working on the computer all day, shake your hands rapidly.  Do this several times throughout the day.

Stretch your wrists, stretch your arm out with palm down, and with your other hand, pull your fingers down. Hold for three seconds. Then pull up on fingers. Hold for three seconds. Repeat and alternate three times.

Do shoulder and neck rolls in a circular motion.  Repeat 10 times.

To stretch your ankles and calves, hold one foot off the floor with your leg straight.  Flex your ankle by pointing your toes up. Extend your ankle by pointing your toes down. Do this ten times, and repeat with your other leg.

Sitting in your chair circle, move one foot clockwise, then counter-clockwise, and repeat by switching feet.

To work your chest and shoulders, place both hands on your chair arms and slowly lift your bottom off the chair. Lower yourself back down; however, stop short of the seat and hold for a few seconds. Repeat 10 times.

Sit facing forward in your chair, turn your head to the left and your torso to the right, then hold for a few seconds. Repeat 10 times and switch sides.

Sitting in your swivel chair with your back straight and feet hovering just off the floor, place your fingertips on the edge of your desk and twist to each side, starting from the left and then the right.  Repeat 10 times.

There are benefits to taking a few minutes to exercise and stretch throughout the day.  By exercising and stretching, employees can improve their work-life balance by squeezing in some activity amid their busy lives.  Research has shown that employees who engage in physical activity are more likely to have job burnout.

Reflection Question:

Which of these tips will you start incorporating into your daily routine at work?

The Practice of Journaling

The Journal

A few weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  The sixth key action step is working on the practice of journaling.

Choose a time to journal daily.  It can be when you get up in the morning, on your lunch time or before going to sleep.  You may use the questions from this website or just self-reflect about your day. Journaling can open up your mind to change and help inspire you to pursue your dreams, aspirations and goals.

Journaling allows you to alter your thoughts which block you from achieving your goals.  We all need someplace to think and rejuvenate.  Are you taking time for you?   Would scheduling some time help?  Is this something to consider for creating balance in your life?  If you don’t have a place, imagine where to find one?  It could be anywhere you feel at peace.  Why not consider journaling and let me know how it made a difference in your life.  ~ Patti

Look up and see LIFE!

Look up

What is around YOU?

Two weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  One of the key action steps was putting gratitude into our life and actions.

The other day I read a post from actor Keanu Reeves.  It was absolutely beautiful about seeing life around you.  Here is what he said about a photo of him and the background of a busy city and everyone rushing around:

“You see these people behind me? They are rushing to work and not paying attention to anything. Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to take the time out to enjoy the beauty in life. It’s like we’re zombies. Look up and take your head phones out. Say Hi to someone you see and maybe give a hug to someone who looks like they’re hurting. Help out someone. You have to live every day like it’s your last. What people don’t know about me is that I had depression a couple of years back. I never told anyone about it. I had to fight my way out of depression. The person who was holding me back from my happiness was ME. Every day is precious so let’s treat it like that. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so live today! I hope you share this post to spread love this holiday.” ~ Keanu Reeves

So many people are lonely and/or depressed.  Reaching out with a hello, a smile or hug could really change their day for the better.  We make ourselves so busy we lose sight of what is really important in life.  Look up, enjoy life and others.

I also read this wonderful story a few days ago and I don’t know who wrote it but I thought I would share:

“One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

After their return from the trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “It showed me just how poor we really are.”

What a great perspective.  Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession. It is all based on one’s perspective.  Sometimes it takes the perspective of a child to remind us what’s important.” ~ Unknown

Some people are not thankful for what they have and are wanting what others have.  They are not grateful for the love ones they have in their life and are too busy wanting more instead of enjoying what they have.

The moral of these two stories is to be grateful, enjoy what you have and what is around you.  Be kind and love others.  Quit comparing yourself to others and appreciate what you have because what someone else has may not be right for you.  Enjoy life to the fullest. ~ Patti 🙂

Self-reflection questions:

  • What are you grateful for in your life?
  • How are you going to show kindness towards others?
  • How are you going to stop comparing yourself to others?
  • What steps are you going to take to enjoy life?

Muddy Waters

This summer I was sitting by the river watching it flow.  The river was very muddy from the day before rain.  The thought came to me.  We are like a river at times.  Sometimes we are crystal clear, on the right path and other times we are just plain muddy.  In the times of a muddy river we make mistakes, mishaps, miss the path, and even lose relationships.  We get down in the mud and get stuck.   The mud seems to be pulling down hard.  We all get immovable at times and can’t seem to step out of the same old misery.  Sometimes we are so deep we can’t see a way out.  Other times we are on the edge of the mud and are slipping just hanging on by a slimy rock.  Sometimes our feet are just sinking very slowly but we can help ourselves by reaching for a limb.

If you are stuck in that muddy river why not ask for assistance and have the life you really want.  Peace, joy, happiness and love.  It is never too late to climb out of the muddy river.  There is a limb (a coach) wanting to pull you out just reach for it.  The limb is waiting for you with open branches.  Take a chance it is worth the adventure.    ~ Patti

Questions:  What flowing river are you?  Where do you want to be?
