Time for Vacation Planning

Spring is upon us!  Now is the time to start planning a vacation. We all need a little time away from work for our mental and physical health.  Okay, let’s do it and come up with a great plan for your ultimate vacation.

Here are some tips to get you started:

Review your calendar before it fills up. What days are available for a week or two?

Okay, you have found some days that are open, submit those days for vacation leave to your boss.

Set your vacation dates on the calendar and block out those dates.

Immediately start thinking about what you would like to do on vacation.

What sounds fun, exciting or interesting to you?  Going to a museum, relaxing on the beach, reading a book with a nice breeze, hiking, skiing, boating, fishing, scuba diving, dancing, attending a baseball game, bird watching, zoo, wildlife park, camping, or traveling somewhere you have never been before.

Now, it is time to book the travel arrangements and accommodations.  It is important to do it right away, so nothing else can be scheduled for that time.

What job functions can you delegate while you are gone?  Start training others for those tasks, so when you are on vacation these things get completed and are done right.  No worrying while you’re gone.  It is being handled.

Share your duties with the whole team.  Giving different tasks to several people will ensure they can still perform their own job assignments as well.

Communicate to everyone you will be on vacation from this date to this date and you will be unavailable during those dates.

Insert the vacation dates on your email notification, voice mail messages and whom to contact while you are out.

The most important thing is UNPLUG.  Reframe from checking your work emails or voice messages until you get back.

By enjoying your time off, you will come back to work refreshed, recharged, motivated, inspired and passionate.  Taking a vacation is good for you and everyone around you!

Call to Action:

After returning from vacation, tell me about your vacation; even if it was a “staycation”.  Were you refreshed, motivated and ready to come back to work?  I would love to hear all about it. ~ Patti

2017 Vision Statement (How to Write One for Your Business)

With the New Year coming soon, this is a great time to start thinking about the upcoming year and your business strategic goals.  A “Vision Statement” is a great way to get the planning started.

What is a Vision Statement?

According to BusinessDirectory.com ~ the definition of a “Vision Statement” means:

An aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future. It is intended to serves as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action.

A Vision Statement helps keep a business on track.  It is to inspire, encourage, and energize your business.  It is a visual reminder of why you are in business.

How to create a Vision Statement:

The statement should be within one or two sentences and about ten to thirty words.

It needs to be specific to your business and aligned to the business values.

a.   What do you believe?

b.   Why do you do it?

c.   What is the purpose?

d.   What does the business do?

e.   What does the business want to be known for?

f.   What problems or services does the business want to solve?

Keep it simple. Do not use jargon or abbreviation.

Make the Vision Statement with emotion.  Be passionate, unique, different, dream big and focus on business success.

Write the Vision Statement in present tense.

Describe your business outcome in five to ten years as if it was now.

After composing the draft for the Vision Statement seek out truthful honest feedback and review from others.

From the feedback responses, if needed, rewrite the Vision Statement to perfection.

Why does a Business Need a Vision Statement?

A Vision Statement is a clear vision of desired outcomes that inspires your business.  It defines the direction and strategy of the business and supports a continual focus on where the business wants to be.  If your business doesn’t have a Vision Statement the business is without direction and inspiration.

The Take Away:

A Vision Statement keeps the business moving in the right direction.  It is a constant reminder of where the business wants to be.  It motivates, inspires and guides the business on what it wants to achieve.

Halloween at the Office… Tips, Ideas and How Not to Get Carried Away [GUEST BLOGGER]

Halloween, fZombie worker. Vector flat cartoon illustrationor some, is the most wonderful time of the year without question.  For those of us who become giddy at the sight of October on the calendar, know that we can get a bit carried away with decorations, treats and of course, costumes.

As a manager, it is your responsibility to set guidelines prior to the big day to lessen the chance of insensitivity, outrageousness, and inappropriateness.  I encourage all companies, large or small, to send out a memo outlining expectations, celebration announcements and most of all, costume guidelines. While this season is sure to bring a slew of Harley Quinn’s out of the woodwork for the big night, we want to be sure she doesn’t show up at work.  In the same token, during a presidential election year, it isn’t quite right to bring those politics into the workspace. Halloween can be fun in the office if planned well.

(CLICK HERE FOR A HALLOWEEN MEMO TEMPLATE)

When it comes to costumes and fun, contests are always a big hit, especially with your competitive sales teams.  Offer prizes that relate to work incentives;  prime parking space for a month, free lunch, items from the promotional closet, day off, half-day Fridays for a month, sleep in Mondays for a month, special plaque or statue award…. possibilities are endless. Create categories for winners; Best Overall Costume, Most Creative Costume, Best Ironic Costume etc.  You can also offer a theme for the day; favorite television or movie character, characters from The Office, Parks & Rec or other office genre show; favorite candy or cereals are fun (it may be best not to choose favorite superheroes…masks and makeup should not be worn covering the entire face at work).

Offer costume ideas if you are so inclined.  Click  here to visit my Office Costume Pinterest board.  You may find some pretty cool, appropriate costume ideas….

Remember that not everyone celebrates Halloween for various reasons.  Questioning why someone is not in costume or their reasons for not celebrating is discriminatory and should not be done.

If you really want to boost morale in the office, host a Halloween Pet Parade and invite staff to bring their (well trained, non-exotic) pets to work for the afternoon or even better, host an evening family party and set up a trick or treat trail for the kids.  Both of these take a bit more work and effort but if you can find an overzealous Halloween fan, they are most likely willing to spearhead the project.

Wishing you a fun & Happy Halloween!

8 Tips to Organize Your Workspace

Are you buried in paper?
Does your desk have no open space left?
Are you constantly searching for things on your desk?

Well, you are not alone.
I struggle with this as well.  Alright, it is time to get organized and de-cluttered.

Here are some tips for us to start the process of having a clean, de-cluttered, organized functional work space:

Tip #1 ~ Have a Vision:  Start with a vision of what you want your desk to look like.  Share this vision with everyone you know for a support system.  You may even get some help to clear and clean your desk.  🙂

Tip # 2 ~ Create Time: Block out time each day to work on de-cluttering and clearing off your work space.

Tip # 3 ~ Decide What is Important to Keep:  Ask yourself what is a “must have” on your desk and keep those things.  Move them to a safe location so they don’t accidentally get thrown away.  Go get a large trash can, a shredder and large box for items to give away.  You may need two large boxes if it is anything like my desk.

Tip #4 ~ Give Away Boxes:  Start with the give away boxes.  This will help ease the process for you.  You will feel like you are making a difference by giving away to others.  After you have completed the give away boxes, let’s move to the throw away stuff.

Tip#5 ~ Time to Purge: Start throwing away items with no use, no longer needed or wanted.  Fill up that large trash can.  Just do it!

Tip #6 ~ Time to Shred:  Time to shred the paper, files and materials which are out of date, the record retention dates have passed and it is no longer needed.  If you haven’t touch it in a year, “Do you really need to keep it?”

Tip # 7 ~ Create Colored Folders:  The paper files you need to keep.  Create colored meeting and project folders.  File them off your desk in a cabinet or box.  After this is completed, it is important to file these folders daily.  Put them back where you got them so your desk stays clear.

Tip #8 ~   Time to Sparkle:  Wipe down your desk with cleaning products and arrange your “must haves” on your clean sparkling desk.

Take Away:

Now, you have a clean de-cluttered workspace.  According to research studies when you have a clear de-cluttered desk you are more motivated and productive.  You are able to find things quickly and are not wasting time looking for important documents.  I would love to see your comments about your work space.

Do you feel more motivated and productive with a clean de-cluttered work space?
