Exploring the Trend of Silently Quitting Work from Chaos to Calm

In this episode, where we explore the growing issue of silently quitting in the workplace.

Have you experienced silently quitting?

Click to watch video.

As a manager and supervisor, are you experiencing your employees silently quitting?

I came across an article on LinkedIn about the rising trend of quietly quitting and thought this is a good topic to explore.

Silently Quitting, which can contribute to a lack of enthusiasm, decreased productivity, or a reluctance to take on new tasks, has increased due to workplace burnout, dissatisfaction, and blurred lines between work and personal life. Many employees feel overwhelmed by expectations and find themselves doing just enough to meet their job requirements without going above and beyond.

Dealing with employee disengagement is not a passive task. It requires a proactive approach, and let’s explore why.

Here are some strategies for managers and supervisors:

Be a safe environment where employees share their thoughts, feedback, and concerns while creating a healthy work-life balance by respecting personal time and encouraging breaks. Flexible work arrangements help. Ensure employees understand their roles and responsibilities. Monitor workloads to ensure they are manageable, that employees are calm, and that they have the resources they need. Demonstrate engagement and positivity in your work. Your attitude can influence the team’s morale.

Having strategies can help create a more engaged and motivated workforce, reducing the likelihood of silent quitting.

Silent quitting can have several effects on the workplace.

When employees disengage, this creates an unpleasant atmosphere. Employees not invested in their work are slow to complete tasks or may not complete them. Employees who feel undervalued or unmotivated may seek other opportunities, leading to turnover rates and the costs of hiring new staff.

Addressing the issues that lead to silent quitting—such as lack of recognition, limited growth opportunities, or poor work-life balance—can help mitigate these adverse effects.

“Silent Quitting,” where employees disengage from their work without formally resigning, can significantly affect managers, supervisors, and employees.

Managers and Supervisors may see a reduction in team performance. If some members are visibly disengaged, the overall team morale can suffer.

They might have to take on extra responsibilities or redistribute tasks to accommodate less engaged and disengaged employees.

If silently quitting becomes the norm, Managers may need to implement these strategies.

To address silent quitting, managers can foster open communication, provide support, and ensure employees feel valued, engaged, and safe.

Question:

How have you experienced silent quitting, and how did you handle it?

Exploring the Impact a Manager and Supervisor Have on Their Employees

This podcast episode explores managers’ and supervisors’ impact on their employees.

Click to watch the video of Episode 33 Exploring the Impact a Manager and Supervisor Have on Their Employees.

Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on your impact as a manager or supervisor?

Self-reflection is not just a tool for personal growth but a powerful way to empower yourself and for the well-being of your team.

I recently came across this powerful quote: ‘Your manager has more impact on your mental health than your therapist or doctor. Having a good boss can change your life. ~ Unknown.’

When you hear this quote, does it resonate with your experiences as a manager or supervisor?

What thoughts or memories does this quote bring up for you?

Throughout my career, I’ve had bosses who have influenced me positively and negatively. For instance, a manager who recognized my hard work and promoted me, boosting my confidence and my career path. On the other hand, a supervisor constantly criticized me, leading to people-pleasing behaviors. I couldn’t help but relate to the message.

What about you?

As managers and supervisors, our decisions and actions profoundly impact others, often more than we realize. We must understand and acknowledge this responsibility. I know throughout my career, the decisions I made impacted myself, the employees, and the work environment, whether positive or negative. I made decisions with strategies and thought about how it would affect all of us. Sometimes, you think you made a good decision and later realize you didn’t; that happens, but I learned valuable lessons throughout those years.

People often criticize Managers and Supervisors without understanding the dilemmas, the reasoning behind the decisions, or the compromises and negotiations required to maintain a business or corporate setting.

Let’s explore:

*Be aware of changes in your staff’s behaviors, such as increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, or other behavioral changes.

*Show empathy and provide support during challenging times, personally and professionally.

*You can significantly enhance job satisfaction by providing opportunities for personal development, growth, and advancement.

*It’s a powerful way to show compassion and investment in your employees’ well-being.

*Encouraging flexible working hours, remote work options, and taking time off.

*Provide coaching, feedback, and training opportunities.

*Address conflicts in the workplace through listening and good communication with each other.

Creating a safe and positive workplace is not just a pleasant environment but a must for any manager or supervisor. It’s a commitment to your team’s well-being and a powerful way to inspire and motivate them. Such a workplace can transform chaos into calm, create harmony, and increase productivity, job satisfaction, employee retention, and good communication within team relationships.

Exploring What Are Escaping From In Life and Work As A Manager and Supervisor

Hi,
Managers and Supervisors
How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we’ll explore lifescaping and what may hold us back from achieving our goals.

Click to listen to the podcast Episode 30 –  Exploring What Are Escaping From In Life and Work As A Manager and Supervisor.

Lifescaping is a term I coined a few years ago. Wanting to escape from the life you are living but still there and extremely unhappy in the daily grind.

Think about your life right now. Are you creating the life you want, or going through the motions, or living a life for everyone else but what you want?

What are you escaping from in Life and Work?

Figuring out what is holding you back from enjoying your life is critical. Being brave and confronting it will end the constant worry, anxiety, and unhappiness in your daily life.

What’s in your life you need to remove or change to create harmony?

Make a list of the things that you want to remove from your life.

Here are some examples:

  • A toxic friend
  • A hostile workplace
  • A verbally abusive partner
  • A controlling family member
  • A destructive behavior
  • A job position that is no longer inspiring you
  • Lazy employees
  • A demanding Boss
  • A backstabbing co-worker
  • Unhappy staff
  • A gossiping work environment
  • No positive recognition

Do you resonate with any of these?

List things you want in life to create to achieve harmony and balance.

Here are some examples:

  • Positive Encouraging Friends
  • A Motivating Career
  • A Peaceful Home
  • A Happy Loving Family
  • Good Health
  • Some Fun and Adventure
  • A Healthy Lifestyle
  • A New Job Position

Think about what you want and the steps you will take to improve your life.

Start slowly removing the things blocking you from achieving your goals and adding the things that will help you change your circumstances to achieve them.

Once you start implementing the action steps, you will feel the shift from being trapped to a sense of peace and freedom to be you.

What are you waiting for?

Exploring Why to Use Affirmations as a Manager and Supervisor

Click to watch the video.

Click to listen to audio.

Hi,
How’s it going?

I am Patti Oskvarek from Coaching for Inspiration with Patti, a Work-Life Balance and Leadership coach, Reiki Master, Blogger, and Podcaster.

I help managers and supervisors to become better leaders and live a more purposeful, balanced life outside of work.

Today, I wanted to share about Affirmations.

When I worked as a Manager and Supervisor, there were days I needed encouragement, a boost of confidence, or meaningful inspiration when all around me was in chaos. I would recite affirmations to help me get through the day.

I would write affirmations on yellow sticky notes and put them on my steering wheel, computer, or bathroom mirror. To help get me motivated for the day. When I took a break, I would listen to affirmations as I took a walk.

Affirmations helped me refocus some positive thoughts and get the negative thoughts out of my head to reframe those thoughts into good ones.

Some people think Affirmations are woo-woo. However, I don’t see it that way. It can shift your mindset if you want it bad enough. If you are dealing with the daily grind and have constant interruptions or coworkers trying to discredit you, having positive words and thoughts is good to keep you stable, inspired, and focused.

Have there been times when you needed some inspiration, reassurance, or encouragement during your work day?

I use affirmations in my coaching style by giving clients affirmations during coaching sessions to keep them focused on their goals.

While in a coaching session, I may use my Work-Life Balance Affirmation cards that I created during the coaching session and pull a card; the expression on their faces is priceless because the card is what they need to hear to inspire them.

Clients use them, and they recite the affirmation daily and weekly. It reminds them of their wants and keeps them focused on the end goal.

I created the Work-Life Balance affirmation cards to inspire and encourage; read and repeat them throughout the day. Post them around your home, work area, or in your vehicle. They are pocket-sized, which makes them easy to carry around with you.

How to use the Work-Life Balance Affirmation Cards:

Shuffle and randomly select a card, reflect on it, and repeat the affirmation throughout the day. Or choose a card for the day you would like to focus on and have in your life.

Exploring How to Deal with Words Left Unsaid

Hi, Manager and Supervisors
How’s it going?
In this podcast episode, we will explore dealing with unsaid words.

I am sure we all had a life situation where we wished we told someone how we truly felt. Whether it was a childhood crush or wished we spoke up at a group meeting or knew something was happening that wasn’t right.

Fear can immobilize us not to act. Then Guilt or regret lingers on and on inside of us. It may continue throughout our lifetime. Guilt or shame can leave us feeling empty, unsatisfied, or longing for something we didn’t have the guts to pursue. You probably heard the old saying, “Time heals all wounds.”  Does it?

Some wounds will never heal until addressed, which is easier said than done.

How many of us have been ghosted sometime in our life?

It may have been a relationship, a job offer, a promotion, a networking acquaintance, a promise, or a business deal.

Did you want to know the reason why?

I know when it happened to me, I wanted to know why.

Unfortunately, most of the time, especially in the business setting, a reason why will never come.

Overthinking about the situation can take a toll on a person. It may cause depression, anger, suicidal thoughts, sadness, ulcers, overwhelm, uncontrollable crying, anxiety attacks, and so much more.

Time may soften the disappointment, regret, and hurt, but it’s still deep inside. Time is not the healer; it is the inner work of dealing with the emotions that heals you. Healing requires constant mental work of positive self-talk and letting it go.

How do you get over it and move on?

🦋 Recite positive affirmations for healing and to eliminate negative thoughts.

🦋 Create a gratitude journal. Every day in the journal, write one to three things you are grateful for daily.

🦋 Be aware of your emotions and feelings; take time to feel them — work on halting the complaining, constantly talking about it, and overthinking the situation.

🦋 Spend time with positive, happy, and motivated people.

🦋 Pick your battles. Sometimes, chasing the person may cause more damage to you. If the recipient doesn’t want to hear from you, they won’t respond. Start focusing on what you want in life; you are worth more.

🦋 Hire a life or leadership coach or therapist to help you overcome the hurt and disappointment.

Isn’t it time to be happy?

Being upset, angry, and overthinking isn’t working. Love yourself and those around you enough to let it go. Believing you deserve a better life of peace, joy, and love is a huge part of healing.

Today’s podcast Affirmation

I let go and move on!

Question: How did you move on from words left unsaid?

Exploring Holiday Time for a Manager and Supervisor at Work

Click to listen to podcast Episode 27 Exploring Holiday Time for a Manager and Supervisor at work.

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

Holiday Time is coming. Are you prepared as a Manager and Supervisor?

For a manager and supervisor, this can be a stressful time keeping the business running at maximum speed or at all.

Holidays have a lot of personal stress and often affect the work environment. What do I mean? It can be distracting and can lower productivity in the workplace. Some people become less productive at work during the holiday season and lose motivation. Productivity may be lower because managers and staff are on leave from the office, and workflow slows down.

While the holidays for some are to unwind and unplug while away from the office for others, the work still goes on and can be stressful trying to juggle home life and work life.

All your staff may want the same time off, and you may have to refuse leave requests. The people denied leave may be angry and upset and don’t want to be there, and morale goes down and some even call in sick, which makes the workplace unbearable for those still there.

How do you handle these situations as a Manager and Supervisor?

Do you have a plan of action to ease the circumstance, or are you flying by the seat of your pants, or do you even care?

What are some ways to prepare and ease the anxiety for you and your staff?

  1. Do you rotate Holiday leave time with the staff? If someone takes off one Holiday, they work the other Holidays. Then, they take another Holiday the following year but not the one they got the previous year.
  2. Or does the team sit down and determine together what Holidays they get off?
  3. What about you? Do you take time off during the holidays? Do you plan to take time off and not just physically be there but mentally and emotionally as well?

Preparing well in advance with your staff who is taking time off and what holidays you are taking off – gives everyone a sense of commitment and understanding, and everyone can prepare with their family and friends.

In the month of October, I would start to develop the Holiday Vacation Leave plan with my staff. I remember how stressful ensuring we had enough staff coverage during the holiday weeks was. Until I came up with Holiday Leave Action plans early in the year so everyone knew who was working and who was not during the October – December season.

During the Holiday season, avoid bringing work home so you can enjoy your time away from work and include yourself in the holiday rotation plan. Many managers and supervisors don’t take any leave time during the Holidays, which is unfair to you and your family.

Time to reflect: What is your Holiday Leave Time plan for you and your employees?

Today’s podcast Affirmation

I am prepared for the Holidays at work!

Question: Do you feel that work and personal life compete with your attention?

Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

Click to listen to the podcast Episode 25 Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

Hi,

Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore the feelings of working in a toxic workplace as a manager and supervisor.

Are we responsible for other’s attitudes and responses toward us and others?

It depends on how we treat people and ourselves. If we are abrupt, condescending, and demanding, we may be responsible for how people respond and react to that behavior towards them. How do you feel or respond to a boss, co-worker, peers, and others in the workplace or outside of work who are rude, unkind, or harsh in their tone with you?

What are the effects of working in a toxic environment?

I know how I felt. I didn’t like the person I was becoming, working in a hostile and toxic environment. I lost my compassion, empathy, joy, and excitement and was untrusting and sometimes judgmental towards others. The untrusting thoughts of thinking people had an unsavory agenda, feeling unsafe, bulldozing me, watching the Sh*t Storm every day around me, and trying to cope with the emotions of dealing with the daily grind and having to fake it to get by.

Daily, I felt like I was giving away my power and values or losing kindness and happiness through people’s interactions and nasty behaviors, which had nothing to do with me. Still, I was feeling responsible for the unhappiness around me. Being highly sensitive can be a blessing and a curse in the workplace and home. Is it my stuff, or is it others? The trick is identifying whose crap it is. Letting go and not holding on to it or overthinking all of it. It’s not about me; I needed to remind myself that it’s not my responsibility for other people’s BS.

Empathy without boundaries doesn’t work and can be self-destructive and disruptive to the workplace.

When I became a supervisor, I wanted to help people and make a positive difference in my employee’s lives. As managers and supervisors, we coach, teach, and mentor the others around us, but they have the choice of how they show up, respond, and behave. When out of balance, we project on the people around us. Taking time away is good for us to regroup, refocus, and destress when we feel we have lost empathy and compassion.

Are our actions contributing to a positive, negative, or neutral outcome in the workplace environment energy?

What are the results of working in a cohesive, collaborative, supportive environment?

When we realize how we show up daily in our workplace as someone who wants to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, the work environment becomes productive, enjoyable, and cohesive, and the atmosphere changes for the better.

Today’s podcast Affirmation

I choose to let go of what I can’t control!

I would love your thoughts on this topic, and if there is a topic you would like me to explore, please leave a comment.

Exploring Reversing Rude Behavior in Meetings from Chaos to Calm

In this podcast episode we explore reversing rude behaviors in meetings.

Click to listen Episode 24 – Exploring Reversing Rude Behavior in Meetings from Chaos to Calm

Have you ever been in a meeting where at least one person or all attendees have nothing positive to say about anything?

As Managers or Supervisors, having efficient and effective meetings is crucial to running a successful business. Group meetings that aren’t productive waste valuable time and cost the company money.

Let’s explore what may be considered rude behaviors in meetings.

  • Interrupting the person speaking
  • Not listening, acting bored, or lack of engagement
  • Being disrespectful to the speaker
  • Two people are talking privately among themselves while someone else is speaking
  • People are just plain hostile to each other
  • Arguing over whose point is right
  • Overtalking each other
  • Sarcastic mean comments to the speaker or each other
  • Being very judgmental of each other
  • Participants take everything that is said very personally due to the hostile interaction
  • Embarrassing the host or leader with malicious remarks

I have been in group meetings where all of these actions have happened, been the target, and participated in some disrespectful behaviors. I am not proud of how I acted; I was discourteous and unprofessional sometimes, but it was acceptable to voice your opinion. Was this behavior a way to conquer and get what was needed? Not really. Did anything get resolved? Most of the time, nothing got accomplished.

What happened to common courtesy, collaboration, and respectfulness towards each other?

How can we change the behavior in meetings?

It takes one person at a time, starting with Managers and Supervisors, to lead by example and reverse this unprofessional behavior.

Here are some tips:

  • Set up rules of conduct for the meeting(s). Go over them at the beginning of each session as a reminder. Have the code of conduct on the agenda template. As time passes with the same group of attendees, the code of conduct will only need addressing if a new person attends the meeting and reads the code of conduct at the beginning.
  • When someone says something negative, turn to them and say something positive about the topic or person.
  • When someone intentionally breaks meeting etiquette, politely remind them or refer to the code of conduct.
  • As the manager or supervisor, focus on following the code of conduct, leading by example, and positive meeting etiquette will become achievable by all participants.
  • Redirect the “off-topic” discussions for later.

A set code of conduct and behavior etiquette is essential to successful meetings. Being courteous and respectful allows everyone to speak, be heard, participate, and engage, which is when great results will happen. Be organized and prepared. As Managers and Supervisors, we lead by example; if we are focused and engaged, our employees will be too.
