Q&A 1 Bonus Podcast Episode Exploring Life and Work with Patti

Hi, Managers and Supervisors
How’s it going?

In this bonus Question and Answer podcast episode, I wanted to answer these questions a listener asked me.

Click to listen to podcast episode.

Why do you ask questions and sometimes not give tips or solutions to the discussed topics?

This podcast is for Managers and Supervisors to self-reflect and explore within themselves on topics I discuss and to come up with solutions they already know the answer to and for self-awareness of themselves as leaders and become better people at work and home.

Why are the podcast episodes 5 -6 minutes?

The podcast episodes are 5 – 6 minutes because the audience I serve works longer hours and only has a few moments to listen.

As a leadership and work-life balance coach, I am committed to helping managers, supervisors, and others become better leaders and live a more purposeful, balanced life outside of work. I do this for the listeners to explore themselves, situations, and topics that happen as a Manager and Supervisor that they may not be able to discuss with others or how they behave can affect their teams and family.

I talk about topics people are scared to discuss but want help with. Years ago, it was acceptable, but it is not now. I’ve had listeners comment that when they have listened to some of the topics I discussed, they lived it, and that is why they left the corporate environment and went out on their own.

Thank you for the questions and for letting me clarify the format of these podcast episodes and why coaching helps others open up awareness and discussion of complex topics.

Until next time when we meet again!

Exploring The Feelings Of Aloneness As A Manager or Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore the feeling of aloneness as a Manager and Supervisor.

Click to listen to the podcast Episode 23 Exploring The Feelings Of Aloneness As A Manager or Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Have you ever felt that as a leader, you are isolated and not having anyone to talk to about work situations?

I know I have. I think we have all been there. Our decisions are sometimes tough and tax our minds, body, and soul. The relationships within the workplace, at times, are brutal.

It reminds me of the TV Show Alone. This show is about ten survival experts put in a remote area at least 10 miles away from each other to fend for themselves with ten survival items, some clothes, and live off the land.
It is interesting to follow each participant on their journey of living alone and how they cope with surviving from dealing with emotional, physical, and mental challenges with a lack of food and harsh elements.

What is their breaking point?

What keeps them going out there when they could easily hit a button and go home?

The reasons they are there in the first place, how that goal changes once they experience their time alone, and the hardship they endure.

How does this compare to your work life?

Are there days when you want to hit a button and go home and never go back?

Days of being a manager and supervisor can be overwhelming, especially when you have no support or lack of trust in others in the workplace due to betrayal, unrealistic expectations, or harsh criticism.

This life lesson changed their lives in ways they never thought it would. The time they spent in self-reflection about what matters.

To see their struggles, whether physical, mental, or emotional, can bring you to tears. How excited and thankful they get for catching a fish or trapping an animal in a snare. Each day is about trying to hold on and not give up.

Sometimes, this is how it feels for managers and supervisors dealing with the daily grind “ALONE.”  Trying to hold it together each day—the pressure of being squeezed from top to bottom, trying to survive the criticism and actions of yourself and others, and being judged for every decision made or not made. The fear of what will happen when you walk into the office can be the breaking point of success or ruin.

Worrying about layoffs, unreasonable workload demands, meetings that don’t amount to anything, expectations of successfully managing the chaos each day, and ridiculous emails to answer—trying to work or lead your team without showing emotions.

Feeling emotions is natural, and what happens if you don’t have anymore?

When did the career strip you of all humanity?

The Alone series teaches us there is so much more to life than boatloads of money, fame, and a demanding career that requires attention 24/7 and eventually leads to burnout, overwhelm, health problems, and anxiety.
The lessons learned from the show are to be grateful, love deeply, cherish the peacefulness, enjoy life to the fullest, and go home and spend time with your family and friends.

What actions have you implemented to combat the feeling of aloneness in the workplace?

I would love to hear your thoughts as a manager or supervisor while surviving the daily grind of feeling alone.

If you are struggling with the daily grind and feel alone, a leadership coach like me will help you work through those everyday challenges to continue moving forward to where you want to be.

Exploring Effects of Bad Attitudes in the Workplace from Chaos to Calm

In this podcast episode we will explore the effects of bad attitudes in the workplace.

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

One day, my husband and I were at Walmart and saw this quote on a T-shirt. I used to be a people person; then people ruined it! ~ unknown.

I held up the T-shirt and told my husband; I am buying this. As a leadership and work-life balance coach, I encourage people not to feel this way. So why did I want to buy the T-Shirt?

Well, I had many days that I felt this way in Leadership.

Have you ever felt this way?

I know I did throughout my career, especially when knee-deep in the day-to-day grind of (Bull Crap). There were days I would go home and think, why am I doing this? Am I even making a difference; why are people so picky, hateful, judgmental, petty, discouraging, and disrespectful? Somedays, Myself included.

How does having a lousy attitude at work affect your reputation, employees, coworkers, customers, and the business’s bottom line?

Do you believe that other people around you at work can jade your perspective toward others, and you start to feel like the T-shirt quote?

What happened to kindness, empathy, praise, encouragement, and compassion in the workplace?

Managers and Supervisors, you can change the attitude in the workplace. One day at a time by your approach towards the workplace, yourself, and others. Once you apply kindness, empathy, praise, encouragement, and compassion to your employees and coworkers, others will notice and, as time goes on, will follow the pattern.

Here are some Self-Reflection Questions About Daily Interactions:

  • Why is everything about who can “one up” each other? How can this change in my leadership style?
  • Why is “knowledge power”? How can I share more?
  • What happened to being genuinely happy for a coworker and recognizing their accomplishments? How and when can I start recognizing others?
  • Why is being so “busy” acceptable and “ignoring” family okay? How can I improve spending time with my family and friends?
  • When will these interactions change within my Leadership?

What kind of leadership legacy do you want to leave behind?

It would be so amazing if this T-shirt is no longer valid in the workplace, and people feel safe at work and are inspired and encouraged to be their best with continual support. So Managers and Supervisors, let’s make it happen one day at a time!

Exploring the Work Life of the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

In this episode, there will be some adult language.

Click to listen to Episode 19 – Exploring the Work Life of the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor

How’s it going, Managers and Supervisors?

My husband was looking at Facebook and saw an advertisement for a hat that said “Sh*t Show Supervisor. He sent it to me, and we both laughed. I said I should do a podcast episode on the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor, get the hat, and wear it while recording it. Too funny. I did consider it, and I might get one. 🙂

What is your definition of a Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor?

A Sh*t Show Manager or Supervisor is a funny, sarcastic phrase for any manager or supervisor who has to deal with constant chaos, situations that are out of control, and managing of staff, which often turns out badly a total mess, failure, or a downright disaster.

Let’s get real here, Managers and Supervisors are the dumping ground for everything. They get the blame from the top and below. They are in the daily firing range and constantly try to dodge a bullet throughout the workday, every day while at work.

As the years go by, as managers or supervisors, the daily grind starts to wear on them, and some get to the point they don’t give a sh*t anymore, and some are just trying to get through the day without dealing with constant chaos. The job can jade the person’s faith in others, and they start questioning people’s motives and behaviors, especially if they experience betrayal and backstabbing in the workplace.

If you have ever been a manager or supervisor at some time or another, you have lived in the “Sh*t Show work environment.

If not, were you doing your job or just skating through?

Or truly blessed with a great work environment and wonderful people who worked well together?

Are you brand new in the manager position or a veteran?

Now, what about the Sh*t Show Managers and Supervisors that love the chaos and are the direct cause of it? They thrive in this environment and love seeing their team under constant pressure, making mistakes, and failing so they can save the day. So how did they get into the position in the first place? Were they good at the technical aspect of the job and got promoted due to that but lacked the people skills?

The life of a Manager and Supervisor can be lonely at times, working late and may even struggle with an unbalanced home life due to the work stress and the pressures of demands placed on them, which trickle into every aspect of their life.

So, here’s some self-reflection to consider:

Are you a Sh*t Show Manager or Supervisor?

Or a good leader?

What do your employees tell their family, friends, and coworkers about you?

I would love your thoughts on this topic.

I let go of my old ways and embrace new ones!

Exploring Why Do We Avoid Doing What We Truly Want in Life and Work From Chaos to Calm

Click to listen to Episode 18 – Exploring Why Do We Avoid Doing What We Truly Want In Life and Work

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

As Managers and Supervisors, we set the tone of the workplace environment. Our actions, thoughts, goals, and interactions towards ourselves and others contribute to our staff, customers, and if we want to come to work. It spills everywhere if we are unhappy at home or work.

I know in the past, I felt unappreciated and showed signs of a lack of respect at work. I didn’t want to be at work, and the energy around the office changed from exciting to unbearable. We all have moments like that and push through them.

Why do we avoid doing what we truly want in life and work?

Is it because we are afraid of what others think?

What if we all lived as we wanted and did the work we truly love?

What would the world look like if this was the case?

Would we be happy, peaceful, thoughtful, meaningful, and kind?

What if we held our tongues and didn’t say all the negative things in our heads and to others?

How would that change our relationships at work and home?

What would the work environment look like, and would that change the work environment and how?

Why do negative thoughts and reactions creep in first instead of happy, positive, loving actions?

What triggers us to think negatively and say rude, unkind words to the people around us? Or consider the worse in others at work instead of the good?

Why do co-workers, the boss, and staff treat each other unkind instead of encouraging each other? What would the work environment look like if kindness came into the workplace? Would people want to go to work and feel safe?

What are happiness at work and home?

Is that what we strive for in life, to be happy, but instead, we have chaos, drama, and people mad at us or around us?

What happened to peace, calm, and love?

What is holding us back from the life we want?

Figuring out what is holding you back from enjoying your life is vital. Being brave and confronting it will end your daily life of constant worry, anxiety, and unhappiness.

What do we need to remove or change to create harmony?

Make a list of the things you want to remove from your life.

Here are some examples:

  • A toxic friend
  • A hostile workplace
  • A verbally abusive partner
  • A controlling family member
  • A destructive behavior
  • A controlling boss
  • Discontent employees
  • Low self-esteem

The big question is, “What do you want in Life and Work?”

Make a list of things you want to create harmony and balance in your life.

Here are some examples:

  • Positive Encouraging Friends
  • A Motivating Career
  • A Peaceful Home
  • A Happy Loving Family
  • Good Health
  • Some Fun and Adventure
  • A Healthy Lifestyle
  • Confidence and Self Worth
  • Hire A Leadership and Life Coach to help you transition to where you want to be
  • Get a Reiki Session

What action steps will you take to change your life for the better?

Once you start the action steps, you will feel the shift from being trapped and avoiding to a sense of peace and freedom.

I know where I want to be and take action to get there.

Exploring Whether Perfection Equals Being An Outstanding Manager or Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors, How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore whether perfection equals being an outstanding Manager or Supervisor.

Click to listen to Exploring Whether Perfection Equals Being An Outstanding Manager or Supervisor.

Hi, Managers and Supervisors, How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore whether perfection equals being an outstanding Manager or Supervisor.

In the business setting, we have been conditioned in the business world to be perfect, which is totally the opposite of imperfect. Everything is about image and how to place yourself to get to the top.

But lately, I’ve heard a lot about perfection, and it is okay to be imperfect, but in the business world, imperfection is something people don’t strive for; they strive for the appearance of perfectionism.

We are taught we need to do this and to do that, and everything is based on perception. We’ve been groomed on how to dress and act, and people capitalize on our mistakes to climb up the corporate ladder. Mistakes are challenging because we need to be perfect. We can’t make mistakes and take risks because errors could happen, so how do people learn if they are scared to make mistakes? Some people won’t take risks or get out of the norm. After all, they are afraid that if they take risks, their mistakes will be out there, and someone else will gain because they made a mistake.

So how do we change this? How do we let people be imperfect so they can learn and grow from those experiences of failure?

We have all met someone who appears to have it all together and comes across as having a perfect life. They post all this fun and fabulous stuff on Facebook about their life. They have a great career, a huge house, a brand new car, and a loving home life from appearances, then, later on, you find out it was all a show.

What about a leader that appears to be perfect?

Is anyone really perfect? Hell no, we all have quirks, habits, and personalities that may sometimes rub someone the wrong way, and we make mistakes; that is what a human does.

Do you respect someone who looks and acts perfect, or do you question their motives?

Who do you respect more, someone who is a hot mess but holds it all together or a fake perfect person always looking to make a great impression?

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should scatter all your dirty laundry at work and not do your job correctly quite the opposite. However, when someone comes across as always perfect and doesn’t admit to making mistakes, it leaves suspicion and a lack of trust. It is hard to build lasting relationships by not showing your human side. You may be called a fair-weather person and much more.

Good leaders admit they are not perfect and make mistakes while genuinely caring about how their actions affect others. They strive to do an excellent job for the company, their superiors, staff, coworkers, and customers. They admit their mistakes, learn from them, and seek not to repeat them.

What are your thoughts on whether perfection equals an outstanding manager or supervisor?

Today’s podcast Affirmation

Mistakes teach me, and I allow myself to grow from them and the lessons they offer.

Exploring Conquering the What Ifs Syndrome of Hiring as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Click to listen Episode 16 – Exploring Conquering the What Ifs Syndrome of Hiring as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors – How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we are going to explore the hiring process. The hiring process may cause anxiety and overwhelm, especially if you are overthinking the What Ifs.

Let’s explore this scenario –

It is time to hire – A valuable team member who has taken another position, and it is time to start the hiring process for their job. You think you won’t be able to find someone else who could bring as much value to the workplace or be a nightmare of “The What Ifs.”

As a Manager and Supervisor, hiring can be challenging and stressful at the same time. As a result, thoughts run through your head of “The What ifs.”

What if’s – I choose the wrong person for the position. They have interviewed well and know what to say, but they are not coachable or have a toxic attitude towards customers, coworkers, and me when they come in.

Yes, hiring someone may be stressful for you, your team, and the interviewee. Wanting to make the right decision can, at times, overtake you. Relax, pause and take time to clear your mind to reason. You can make the final decision in a few days.

List the pros and cons of the top two candidates. What did they communicate from the interview and resume (CV), and what strengths does the team want and need from the potential candidate to make the team unit more substantial and efficient? What expertise does this candidate bring that can help the team succeed?

Things to consider in the hiring process:

  • Have a least one team member in the interview.
  • How about bringing back the two top candidates for a second interview and having them interact with your team?
  • Have team members review the job duties and discuss with them an average day. Candidates feel at ease with team members and may open up more.
  • After their interaction with the candidate, have the candidate meet with you again informally to ask questions they may have. Putting this into action will tell you a lot the more relaxed they are, and you will get more of a feel of their personality.
  • Later after the top two candidates have come back for the second interview and met with staff, ask the staff what their thoughts are. Remember, they have to work with this person. Their opinions are priceless because they could save a lot of damage to you and the team in the end, and this is where trust and honesty come into play. Do they feel comfortable telling you how they think? Do they feel safe expressing their opinions?
  • Now you have the ultimate decision and are responsible for it. The team will understand and respect your decision if you have communicated well with your team. Your employees must know that you appreciate their feedback and respect their perspectives.
  • Some employees may feel more comfortable giving feedback privately, and sometimes the team may want a group meeting to share their thoughts with you. That is where you know you have a team that cares about the job and the work environment and you as their leader.

It is rare in a workplace to have this hiring practice and employees’ honest feedback. As a manager or supervisor, you want to strive for this kind of teamwork and work environment.

Today’s podcast Affirmation

I hire the best candidate for the job!

Exploring How To Keep Your Team Engaged as a Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Click to listen to Episode 15 – Exploring How To Keep Your Team Engaged as a Manager and Supervisor

Today I will explore how to keep your team focused and engaged as a Manager and Supervisor.

Employees make decisions and actions daily that can affect workplace morale, customers, the organization, and profits.

How are you and your team engaging in work?

Is there good engagement between you and your employees?

Do you enjoy the workplace atmosphere? Do they?

What is the key to keeping employees focused and engaged in their work?

  • Start with talking to your employees, getting to know them, and showing interest in them. Ask them how they are doing. Let them speak and listen to them. Provide some open dialogue throughout the conversation. Look at them while they are talking. Be present instead of thinking about other things.
  • Spend time learning about your employees. What are their backgrounds, interests, and values?
  • Provide on-the-job training to help them to succeed. Find their learning style, such as visual, hearing, reading a manual or procedures, hands-on learning, etc.
  • Give employees opportunities to grow in personal development. Employees who develop their work skills and a creative mindset will more likely stay and promote within the company.
  • Give employees special projects and assignments outside their regular duties when they have asked for something else. Employees who are satisfied and learning new things are much more engaged and focused at work.
  • Coach employees with encouragement and act on their suggestions if possible.
  • Encourage employees to network within the company.
  • Have employees participate in the hiring process and have the whole team meet potential candidates. Is this candidate someone who will work well with the team? Get their feedback and perspective. They have to work with this person just as much as you do.
  • Provide some recognition to the hard-working employees and the ones who complete their projects within the target timeframes. And show your appreciation for their accomplishments. Say “thank you” and give them praise for their excellent work.
  • Encourage employees to take breaks to help them get refocused and inspired. Stepping away for a few minutes rejuvenates people.
  • Set clear expectations and make sure your employees understand what expectations. Be clear and direct about workplace goals and objectives. Put the expectation in writing and follow up with the employee on their progress. They may struggle and need guidance to find another way to complete the task. Break down tasks into small achievable steps. This way, they will feel safe and start working on things.

Employees stay with leaders who show interest in them. They are more engaged and focused when they feel appreciated, making a difference and giving credit for their contributions. When a manager and supervisor reflect gratitude towards their employees, everyone will want to come to work each day and give their all!

Exploring Staying Positive In A Unfavorable Work Environment As A Manager and Supervisor From Chaos To Calm

Click to listen to podcast Episode 14 Exploring Staying Positive In A Unfavorable Work Environment As A Manager and Supervisor From Chaos To Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How’s it going?

In this podcast episode Exploring Staying Positive In A Unfavorable Work Environment As A Manager and Supervisor From Chaos To Calm I am going to explore staying positive in an unfavorable work environment.

When you are a manager and supervisor, you get harsh treatment and judgment from your superiors and subordinates. The top tells you to do things your employees don’t want to do, and you are stuck in the middle and have to enforce it.

How do you stay upbeat when continually being pushed down by others?

I understand how easy it is to get sucked into negativity, drama, or a bad attitude when in a toxic work environment. Some people want to pull you into their emotional drama—rude comments about others, sarcastic undertones, and the energy vampires who want to drag everyone else down with them. But unfortunately, people don’t even realize that they have a negative attitude because it has become a habit and spills into their personal lives.

Self-reflect are you personally responsible for the drama since you are in charge of your area? If yes, how can you change it?

When working in a toxic environment, people may start to take everything personally because of the feeling of being verbally attacked, one-upping, taken advantage of, or pointing out mistakes or faults, especially if peers want to move higher in management. They will do anything to make you look bad if they feel you are a threat. As time goes on, it takes a toll on people’s emotions, values, and self-worth.

We all contribute to the workplace vibe in some way or another by how we interact and communicate our thoughts, instructions, crucial feedback, praise, and dealing with backstabbing, betrayal, and interpersonal relationships.

This situation is one of the biggest challenges people face when working with others.

However, there is hope.

What are some strategies to help you stay positive?

  1. When your peer is causing conflict, think about the best way to handle this situation. What are their motives? Should you walk away and not engage and excuse yourself from the conversation? How will it appear if you walk away or stay and engage? Is this person setting you up to react unfavorably in front of others? If you react and respond unfavorably, is it worth the consequences? If it is an employee, you will need to engage in private after both of you have had time to self-reflect on the situation and calm down the heated emotions—Journal how you are feeling and brainstorm solutions to resolve the conflict or crisis. Keep your journal in a locked, safe place.
  2. When there are unkind remarks about someone else, say something nice about that person. This action tends to halt the conversation.
  3. Listen to uplifting music, recite positive affirmations and go for a walk to get clarity.

Be the person you want to be around. Focus on what you want in your life and remove the thoughts of what you don’t—set goals for how you will change your situation and put them into action. Hire a leadership and life coach to help you get where you want to be. ~ Patti
