Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

Click to listen to the podcast Episode 25 Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

Hi,

Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore the feelings of working in a toxic workplace as a manager and supervisor.

Are we responsible for other’s attitudes and responses toward us and others?

It depends on how we treat people and ourselves. If we are abrupt, condescending, and demanding, we may be responsible for how people respond and react to that behavior towards them. How do you feel or respond to a boss, co-worker, peers, and others in the workplace or outside of work who are rude, unkind, or harsh in their tone with you?

What are the effects of working in a toxic environment?

I know how I felt. I didn’t like the person I was becoming, working in a hostile and toxic environment. I lost my compassion, empathy, joy, and excitement and was untrusting and sometimes judgmental towards others. The untrusting thoughts of thinking people had an unsavory agenda, feeling unsafe, bulldozing me, watching the Sh*t Storm every day around me, and trying to cope with the emotions of dealing with the daily grind and having to fake it to get by.

Daily, I felt like I was giving away my power and values or losing kindness and happiness through people’s interactions and nasty behaviors, which had nothing to do with me. Still, I was feeling responsible for the unhappiness around me. Being highly sensitive can be a blessing and a curse in the workplace and home. Is it my stuff, or is it others? The trick is identifying whose crap it is. Letting go and not holding on to it or overthinking all of it. It’s not about me; I needed to remind myself that it’s not my responsibility for other people’s BS.

Empathy without boundaries doesn’t work and can be self-destructive and disruptive to the workplace.

When I became a supervisor, I wanted to help people and make a positive difference in my employee’s lives. As managers and supervisors, we coach, teach, and mentor the others around us, but they have the choice of how they show up, respond, and behave. When out of balance, we project on the people around us. Taking time away is good for us to regroup, refocus, and destress when we feel we have lost empathy and compassion.

Are our actions contributing to a positive, negative, or neutral outcome in the workplace environment energy?

What are the results of working in a cohesive, collaborative, supportive environment?

When we realize how we show up daily in our workplace as someone who wants to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, the work environment becomes productive, enjoyable, and cohesive, and the atmosphere changes for the better.

Q&A 1 Bonus Podcast Episode Exploring Life and Work with Patti

Hi, Managers and Supervisors
How’s it going?

In this bonus Question and Answer podcast episode, I wanted to answer these questions a listener asked me.

Click to listen to podcast episode.

Why do you ask questions and sometimes not give tips or solutions to the discussed topics?

This podcast is for Managers and Supervisors to self-reflect and explore within themselves on topics I discuss and to come up with solutions they already know the answer to and for self-awareness of themselves as leaders and become better people at work and home.

Why are the podcast episodes 5 -6 minutes?

The podcast episodes are 5 – 6 minutes because the audience I serve works longer hours and only has a few moments to listen.

As a leadership and work-life balance coach, I am committed to helping managers, supervisors, and others become better leaders and live a more purposeful, balanced life outside of work. I do this for the listeners to explore themselves, situations, and topics that happen as a Manager and Supervisor that they may not be able to discuss with others or how they behave can affect their teams and family.

I talk about topics people are scared to discuss but want help with. Years ago, it was acceptable, but it is not now. I’ve had listeners comment that when they have listened to some of the topics I discussed, they lived it, and that is why they left the corporate environment and went out on their own.

Thank you for the questions and for letting me clarify the format of these podcast episodes and why coaching helps others open up awareness and discussion of complex topics.

Until next time when we meet again!

Exploring the Work Life of the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

In this episode, there will be some adult language.

Click to listen to Episode 19 – Exploring the Work Life of the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor

How’s it going, Managers and Supervisors?

My husband was looking at Facebook and saw an advertisement for a hat that said “Sh*t Show Supervisor. He sent it to me, and we both laughed. I said I should do a podcast episode on the Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor, get the hat, and wear it while recording it. Too funny. I did consider it, and I might get one. 🙂

What is your definition of a Sh*t Show Manager and Supervisor?

A Sh*t Show Manager or Supervisor is a funny, sarcastic phrase for any manager or supervisor who has to deal with constant chaos, situations that are out of control, and managing of staff, which often turns out badly a total mess, failure, or a downright disaster.

Let’s get real here, Managers and Supervisors are the dumping ground for everything. They get the blame from the top and below. They are in the daily firing range and constantly try to dodge a bullet throughout the workday, every day while at work.

As the years go by, as managers or supervisors, the daily grind starts to wear on them, and some get to the point they don’t give a sh*t anymore, and some are just trying to get through the day without dealing with constant chaos. The job can jade the person’s faith in others, and they start questioning people’s motives and behaviors, especially if they experience betrayal and backstabbing in the workplace.

If you have ever been a manager or supervisor at some time or another, you have lived in the “Sh*t Show work environment.

If not, were you doing your job or just skating through?

Or truly blessed with a great work environment and wonderful people who worked well together?

Are you brand new in the manager position or a veteran?

Now, what about the Sh*t Show Managers and Supervisors that love the chaos and are the direct cause of it? They thrive in this environment and love seeing their team under constant pressure, making mistakes, and failing so they can save the day. So how did they get into the position in the first place? Were they good at the technical aspect of the job and got promoted due to that but lacked the people skills?

The life of a Manager and Supervisor can be lonely at times, working late and may even struggle with an unbalanced home life due to the work stress and the pressures of demands placed on them, which trickle into every aspect of their life.

So, here’s some self-reflection to consider:

Are you a Sh*t Show Manager or Supervisor?

Or a good leader?

What do your employees tell their family, friends, and coworkers about you?

I would love your thoughts on this topic.

Today’s podcast Affirmation:

I let go of my old ways and embrace new ones!

Episode 71 – Does Changing Your Mindset After Fifty Build Better Relationships with Special Guest Rebecca Ronane

Welcome to Building Better Relationships at Home and Work with Angela and Patti.

We have a special guest on this podcast episode, Rebecca Ronane, Life Coach, Podcaster, and Author.

Rebecca Ronane moved from London to a small village in Provence, France, in 1995. She lives with her partner Alain and their dog Myrtle. She worked in the travel industry for thirty years; however, a breast cancer diagnosis quickly followed by a job loss in 2012 allowed her to change direction, although she didn’t feel it then.

A coaching course in 2014 opened the door to a different chapter in her life journey. Since training as a coach, she has set up her businesses, Forward After Fifty and Network Provence. As a result, she has two websites, two podcast shows, and not one but several businesses to her name. She has experienced that moving forward after fifty has the potential to be the most exciting part of your life.

A suggestion in 2021 that Rebecca writes a book was a little like looking down on someone else’s life and ambitions, as it had never been on her agenda. The book was published in January of 2023 and is called Forward After 50: The Rising Reinventors. The book gives insights into how we might limit ourselves in thinking and talking about aging. It’s about changing your mindset around aging today – start associating aging with generating instead of degenerating.

Rebecca discusses:

1. Why she became so passionate about living a great life Forward After Fifty?

2. How can women celebrate and embrace turning fifty?

3. Why do you think women fear aging?

4. How is your mindset the secret weapon towards aging?

5. About her book “Forward After 50: The Rising Reinventors“?

6. And so much more.

Thank you so much for listening; please follow and share the podcast with others, and check out Rebecca Ronane’s:

Exploring Why Do We Avoid Doing What We Truly Want in Life and Work From Chaos to Calm

Click to listen to Episode 18 – Exploring Why Do We Avoid Doing What We Truly Want In Life and Work

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How’s it going?

As Managers and Supervisors, we set the tone of the workplace environment. Our actions, thoughts, goals, and interactions towards ourselves and others contribute to our staff, customers, and if we want to come to work. It spills everywhere if we are unhappy at home or work.

I know in the past, I felt unappreciated and showed signs of a lack of respect at work. I didn’t want to be at work, and the energy around the office changed from exciting to unbearable. We all have moments like that and push through them.

Why do we avoid doing what we truly want in life and work?

Is it because we are afraid of what others think?

What if we all lived as we wanted and did the work we truly love?

What would the world look like if this was the case?

Would we be happy, peaceful, thoughtful, meaningful, and kind?

What if we held our tongues and didn’t say all the negative things in our heads and to others?

How would that change our relationships at work and home?

What would the work environment look like, and would that change the work environment and how?

Why do negative thoughts and reactions creep in first instead of happy, positive, loving actions?

What triggers us to think negatively and say rude, unkind words to the people around us? Or consider the worse in others at work instead of the good?

Why do co-workers, the boss, and staff treat each other unkind instead of encouraging each other? What would the work environment look like if kindness came into the workplace? Would people want to go to work and feel safe?

What are happiness at work and home?

Is that what we strive for in life, to be happy, but instead, we have chaos, drama, and people mad at us or around us?

What happened to peace, calm, and love?

What is holding us back from the life we want?

Figuring out what is holding you back from enjoying your life is vital. Being brave and confronting it will end your daily life of constant worry, anxiety, and unhappiness.

What do we need to remove or change to create harmony?

Make a list of the things you want to remove from your life.

Here are some examples:

  • A toxic friend
  • A hostile workplace
  • A verbally abusive partner
  • A controlling family member
  • A destructive behavior
  • A controlling boss
  • Discontent employees
  • Low self-esteem

The big question is, “What do you want in Life and Work?”

Make a list of things you want to create harmony and balance in your life.

Here are some examples:

  • Positive Encouraging Friends
  • A Motivating Career
  • A Peaceful Home
  • A Happy Loving Family
  • Good Health
  • Some Fun and Adventure
  • A Healthy Lifestyle
  • Confidence and Self Worth
  • Hire A Leadership and Life Coach to help you transition to where you want to be
  • Get a Reiki Session

What action steps will you take to change your life for the better?

Once you start the action steps, you will feel the shift from being trapped and avoiding to a sense of peace and freedom.

Today’s podcast Affirmation

I know where I want to be and take action to get there.
