Look up and see LIFE!

Look up

What is around YOU?

Two weeks ago I wrote about life changing subjects to consider incorporating into ourselves this year in the blog post It is a New Year.  One of the key action steps was putting gratitude into our life and actions.

The other day I read a post from actor Keanu Reeves.  It was absolutely beautiful about seeing life around you.  Here is what he said about a photo of him and the background of a busy city and everyone rushing around:

You see these people behind me? They are rushing to work and not paying attention to anything. Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to take the time out to enjoy the beauty in life. It’s like we’re zombies. Look up and take your head phones out. Say Hi to someone you see and maybe give a hug to someone who looks like they’re hurting. Help out someone. You have to live every day like it’s your last. What people don’t know about me is that I had depression a couple of years back. I never told anyone about it. I had to fight my way out of depression. The person who was holding me back from my happiness was ME. Every day is precious so let’s treat it like that. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so live today! I hope you share this post to spread love this holiday.” ~ Keanu Reeves

So many people are lonely and/or depressed.  Reaching out with a hello, a smile or hug could really change their day for the better.  We make ourselves so busy we lose sight of what is really important in life.  Look up, enjoy life and others.

I also read this wonderful story a few days ago and I don’t know who wrote it but I thought I would share:

“One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

After their return from the trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “It showed me just how poor we really are.”

What a great perspective.  Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession. It is all based on one’s perspective.  Sometimes it takes the perspective of a child to remind us what’s important.” ~ Unknown

Some people are not thankful for what they have and are wanting what others have.  They are not grateful for the love ones they have in their life and are too busy wanting more instead of enjoying what they have.

The moral of these two stories is to be grateful, enjoy what you have and what is around you.  Be kind and love others.  Quit comparing yourself to others and appreciate what you have because what someone else has may not be right for you.  Enjoy life to the fullest. ~ Patti 🙂

Self-reflection questions:

  • What are you grateful for in your life?
  • How are you going to show kindness towards others?
  • How are you going to stop comparing yourself to others?
  • What steps are you going to take to enjoy life?
