Building Better Relationships at Home and Work with Angela and Patti
Patti’s Thoughts on work relationships:
Change is good in the workplace because people don’t get bored, and they learn new things. It is easy to go through the motions if you do the same job function daily. People leaving the team and new people coming onto the team are good. New ideas and new energy come to the team. New projects and different challenges keep everyone thinking and motivated. The same old stuff day after day demotivates staff. Learning new ways and methods helps the team members grow. Now, change can come with upheaval at first. People have to learn how to communicate with each other. There may be some growing pains. It also puts a new perspective on the job. If you don’t like what is changing, you have other options to move on yourself. That isn’t a bad thing. It is a way of reflecting, is it time for me to make a change as well? It could be a new boss or a new job assignment you don’t like. What is this telling you about yourself or the job? Is it time to move on, or will I stay and see how it works? Change is part of life; however, it is scary and uncertain at first. Sometimes it is for the better, and sometimes it helps us improve through the experience. It depends on how hard you fight it.
Angela’s Thoughts on Personal Relationships:
Your partner is a mystery. Too often, we get comfortable or bored with our partner. How do you know? Do you know them? You know their habits. Do you know them? How can you see your partner as a mystery? Do you have a question that you want to ask your partner? Have you already assumed you “know” how they will answer? Notice how you tend to put them in a box. Some ideas on how to get to know your partner in different contexts. Board games that involve moral questions like “scruples,” a new card game, a dance class, a challenging hike or outdoor adventure, book a trip somewhere for a weekend, and don’t tell them where you’re going. Take a train ride instead of the car. Try different modes of transport and feel what it’s like to share a new experience with your partner.
