Why are You Killing Yourself for a Job that will Replace You in a Week?

Why are you killing yourself for a job that will replace you in a week if you died?  Take care of yourself!” ~ Unknown

Lately, I have been seeing more and more people posting this quote on social media and as a work-life balance leadership coach; I should probably address my thoughts on this quote.

Throughout my work life journeys and coaching experiences, I have come to the realization that maybe this quote may absolutely be true.  However, my goal is to change this through my coaching.

It is important to work hard and be a diligent loyal employee but thinking about work 24/7 is not good for you mentally or physically.  Everyone needs to take vacations and get away to rest and relax.

Why are employees feeling this way?

From what I hear, people are working themselves into overwhelm and burn-out.  Some employees care way too much about their jobs to the point of making themselves physically sick.  While others do the bare minimum not to get fired and appear to be the happiest.

Why is that?

I hear this scenario repeatedly that the people who do the least amount of work get promoted while the dedicated doers get passed over time and time again. The Doers are conscientious about their job duties day in and day out, work late, and get the job done with little to no praise or acknowledgment and are slowly killing themselves in the process. They have high anxiety, stress, diabetes, heart disease, no work-life balance strategies, no work boundaries, and so on. While the lazy worker is smiling, laughing, playing on their cell phone all day, and content with collecting their paycheck, while everyone else is covering their job, stressed-out and resentful.

Why do leaders let this happen?

Leaders need to spend time with their employees and know them instead of locking themselves in their offices. Don’t they want to know what is going on? Someone once told me, because the Leader doesn’t care. Reviewing staff’s workload and time management is vital to assist with eliminating overload and overwhelm. Coaching the lazy worker to do their share of the workload is essential for the supervisor. The Doers need to feel comfortable to honestly state to their manager they are overwhelmed and need assistance and the ability to say no to more tasks when they have too much to handle.

Why doesn’t the Leader care?

When loyal, hard-working employees leave by either transferring to another department for the same or less salary or go to the competition or just leave as a Leader, you should be asking this question! Why are they leaving?

Losing good employees hurts the business and the bottom line. Yes, they may make a high salary, but the cost of training new staff and their expertise is now gone, and this alone is very detrimental to a company.

A good leader finds out what is going on within their company. They don’t just sit in their office with the door closed; they ask questions and want the truth, not lip service. They know who is doing the work and who isn’t. They care about the staff and want them to succeed. When hiring internally, the excellent leader recognizes the right person to promote since they know their quality of work, interpersonal skills, and the right fit for the job.

What are some solutions to change this concept?

Find the strengths of the complacent worker and give them those projects.

Coach the complacent employee on doing their work tasks and pulling their share of the workload.

Meet with them daily on their progress for 10 to 15 minutes, getting updates on where they are with their work assignments.

Have them set up daily goals on their work tasks and review their progress.

Is this concept a forgotten principle?

The Cheerful Greeter – He Does Make A Difference!

Recently I went to a doctor appointment, I checked in and went to the waiting room.  My name was called to come and see the doctor, the young man who called my name was smiling.  He greeted me with enthusiasm, said welcome and I hope you are having a great day.  He was beaming.  It was a pleasure to see someone so positive and excited about their job.  He was kind and radiated that kindness.  He walked me to the room and asked me if I wanted some water.  This was a heart hospital and some of the people there were very ill.  Fortunately, I am healthy and my tests results came back very good. 🙂

Having a kind and positive person greet you when you are not sure about your health situation is amazing.  I watched how this gentleman greeted others and made them feel valued.  Even when they were in excruciating pain, they smiled back at him.

Quote ~ “Be the reason someone smiles today.” ~ Unknown

Wouldn’t it be amazing, if all places had a greeter like this young man?  The world would definitely be a happier place. One person at a time can make a difference. ~ Patti

The Benefits of Adult Coloring – Why Do It?

I purchased my first Adult Coloring Book a few years ago. At this present time, I have a variety of coloring books, markers, and pencils. I have received coloring books as gifts, and I have given coloring books as gifts as well. I take coloring books on camping trips and weekend getaways. Coloring, for me, is a way to relax and let go.

On one camping trip, my friends and I spent hours coloring inside my camper while the rain came pouring down. We shared our life challenges and our life aspirations. It was a great way to reconnect with each other. We each had different coloring styles, which made each page unique and different.

Be gentle with yourself; you can’t fail at self-care. ~ Dr. Samantha, Naturopathic Physician

Benefits of Adult Coloring

  1. Coloring is considered therapeutic to reduce anxiety, relieve stress, and alters bad moods.
  2. Coloring is similar to meditating. It increases focus and shifts our thoughts to the present moment.
  3. Coloring applies both hemispheres of the brain, the right and left, simulating the brain responsible for creativity and logic. From what I have read, some physicians recommend coloring for their Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients.
  4. Coloring replaces negative thinking as a distraction.
  5. Coloring five minutes before bedtime has been reported to help some people sleep better because of its calming effects.
  6. Social group coloring evaluates relaxation and the joy of spending time with others.
  7. When coloring, we are unplugged from technology, which engages in self-care “me time.”
  8. Coloring creates boundaries by staying in the lines and evokes metaphorical boundaries in our personal lives.

There is even a National Coloring Day which is August 2nd. Adult coloring is good for the soul. How about taking a few minutes each day before going to bed to color and see if it changes your perspective on life. 🙂 ~ Patti

Why Have Good Communication Skills?

Recently I went to a local bookstore to turn in some books. I’m starting to declutter my home little by little.  I have a long way to go and have been taking baby steps, one huge bag at a time.  I have books in every room of the house.  I guess you could say I became a book hoarder. 🙂

When I was at the bookstore I saw a sign that said you can reserve a space on their large couch area for book clubs.  I thought this would be a great place for the Coffee, Coaching & More group.  When I asked about reserving the area none of the staff knew how I could reserve the space.  The manager was out and one of the staff members said to me they didn’t even know there was a space in the bookstore to reserve.

As I was leaving, I said to one of the employees I’m a life coach and wanted to reserve the space to coach small groups.  She said to me, we need a coach here because the communication in the place is terrible.  I smiled and said yes, communication is very important and I can do group coaching on how to improve communication.  She went over and grabbed a bookstore flyer and said to me, call in a few days when the manager gets back.

Quote: “Communication is the real work of Leadership” ~ Nitin Nohria

As a leader, communication is an extremely crucial skill to have. The ability to communicate and train employees to assist customers when the boss is away is vital. Employees need to feel confident to answer the customer’s questions and not rely on the manager.

A supervisor is not helping their employees or customers by hoarding all the information. Being a good leader is about preparing employees to tackle all challenges that arise and provide excellent customer service, so the business runs smoothly, no matter what.

Self Reflection Question:

When you are unavailable do you feel confident the business will run efficiently without you?

Please share your thoughts on this question:  What have you personally done lately to increase your communication skills with others?

How Does Coaching Change Lives?

May is my favorite month!

It is springtime, International Coaching Week and so much more.  Coaching has such a powerful and unique way of changing lives for the better.

International Coaching Week (ICW) is May 7-13, 2018

What is International Coaching Week?

International Coaching Week (ICW) is an annual week-long global celebration of the coaching profession, which the International Coaching Federal (ICF) local chapters and members spread the word about coaching and how coaching changes lives.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is client focused.  The coach recognizes each client is a unique individual with the ability to determine their own priorities, goals, and action steps towards what they truly want in life.  The coach assists the client through active listening, asking questions, and affirming the client’s accountability.

How Does Coaching Change Lives?

Recently, I asked one of my client’s the following questions:

What has been your experience working with me as your coach?

Answer:  You are firm, when I am not.  You are able to clarify where I may not be standing up for myself – or what I am here to do.  You are fair, and see what is the fair or appropriate thing to do in situations that involved partnership, teams and relationships with others.  You simplify what I am looking for, so I don’t waste time, you help me get straight to the point.

It actually inspires me to do good, be a better person, be INVESTED in people, be caring, be passionate AND be connected to those I work with.  Think about myself and my needs AND think about the needs of others, while making sure I don’t sacrifice my needs.  A lot of care. You make me feel I’m worthwhile, valuable and you make me feel that others are worthwhile and valuable, and show or support me to support the value in others.

How do you think my coaching has helped you become a better leader?

Answer:  By being fearless to express my needs.  In simple terms, so even if I have emotions about expressing my needs.  I still express them.  Plus clarifying the benefits of expressing my needs to the best outcome for all involved.  It is important to understand what coaching means and why it can be essential to your life in and out of the office.

What do you think?  Are you ready to learn more about the coaching experience?

Have you experienced coaching?  If so, feel free to share about your coaching experiences.
