Exploring How to Stop Ignoring The Hard Stuff and Go From Chaos to Calm

Episode 1 Exploring Life and Work with Patti (Podcast)

In this podcast episode, I will discuss – How to Stop Ignoring the Hard Stuff and Go from Chaos to Calm.

Click to listen to Episode 1 – How to Stop Ignoring the Hard Stuff and Go from Chaos to Calm

Have you ever had something to do at work, and you didn’t want to do it?

There are things as a manager or supervisor you don’t want to do, but it is an essential part of the job. You know what I mean, and not addressing it can cause more havoc in the workplace.

Let me give you some examples:

  • Not having crucial conversations with an employee about poor performance
  • Prolonging a discussion with the team about not making goals
  • An email you are told to write by your boss
  • Calling back an angry customer or client
  • Not participating or wanting to go to mandatory leadership meetings
  • Delivering bad news, for example, no bonus, no raises, or possible layoffs within the company

I am sure all of us at one time or another has put something off that might be uncomfortable or didn’t want to do but was loading us down with it continually there, whether in worry, thought, or others depending on it.

Wouldn’t it make life and work more enjoyable if it was no longer in front of us but completed?

Getting it completed takes off a heavy burden, and then you can focus on the other things you want to do.

One of the ways to tackle the hard stuff is to do it first thing in the morning and get it out of the way. If it is a massive project, break it down into tasks. Then, as you complete a portion of the project, you will feel like you are moving forward on getting it done. Checking that section off your to-do list, spreadsheet, or Trello board feels like an achievement and inspiration.

Putting off the hard stuff or undesirable tasks doesn’t contribute to becoming successful. However, once finished, you can move on to more enjoyable tasks and have a great sense of accomplishment.

How to Break Free of Ignoring the Hard Stuff:

  • Identify it is happening and
  • Recognize it and decide to
  • Focus on the task until completed
  • Celebrate when finished

Take control of all distractions such as responding immediately to email notifications, incoming voice mail messages, texts, instant messages, social media notifications. Set specific times and limits for these activities. Block off your calendar for the task. Concentrate by tuning out or turning off all distractions and commit to that particular task.

If working in the office, let others know you are working on something with a deadline or need to finish with no distractions if they could wait on questions. By blocking the time on your digital calendar can help with limiting distractions.

Halt any negative self-talk and replace these thoughts with positive Affirmations. An example – I get things done! By telling yourself, I can do this, and pray for strength to continue and remove all obstacles in the way; it will inspire you to keep going. There were many times I would be sitting at my desk and thinking I can’t do this, and I would pray, journal, and recite positive affirmations to get me through the task, situation, or sh*t storm happening around me.

Envision how you will feel after completing the project. Then, celebrate; it doesn’t have to be something big or expensive. It could be getting a cup of your favorite coffee or taking a break to read a good book, something special to you that feels like a reward.

Sometimes getting started is the hardest, but the rewards are endless. Setting your goal, coming up with a plan of action, and the most important thing is putting the plan into action. Getting started and motivated to take action steps is crucial to change the habit of ignoring the hard stuff. However, it doesn’t help you attain your goal or dream until you get it done. To get what you want, you have to pursue it, and it starts with motivation to want to get things done.

Here are some Self Reflections to ponder:

What are some key factors which are enabling you to put off the hard stuff?

What have you been putting off?

How will it change your circumstances by getting them completed?

Today’s podcast Affirmation is I get things done!

Until next time!

Playcation – It’s Time To Plan It and Do It!

It’s officially summer. The weather is changing to enjoy outdoor adventures. It’s time to start planning and going on vacation activities. Scheduling it on the calendar is the first step to make it happen. After that, the time is blocked out, and work will not occur.

For some planning, a vacation can be overwhelming. Booking the flight, lodging, activities, rent a car, or not renting a car, etc. Staying local and pursuing fun, entertainment, and recreation may be a good option.

What is a playcation?  Here is my explanation of a playcation as doing something fun and enjoyable on vacation. I recommend blocking out and scheduling specific enjoyable activities to do physically while getting some fresh air and sunlight. Maybe it is golfing, parasailing, snorkeling, zip-lining, water skiing, camping, hiking, getting the body moving, and so much more.

What has been your bucket list or what I call adventure list that you always wanted to do? If you don’t have an adventure list, it’s time to make one. Making an adventure list will help you plan future adventures and playcations.

I started making an adventure list by each state in two notebooks; as I see something on TV, Facebook, Pinterest, or hear about it from someone to visit and do that activity, I will write it in the books. If I don’t have the books with me, I put them on my phone in notes and then later write them in the book under that state.

As you begin to plan a playcation, take out your adventure list. I find this is a great motivation tool to experience something new a different and inspire me to do it.

How about making an adventure list and putting it into action?

I would love to hear or see your adventure list. Become carefree and just do it. Let the adventure begin!

Top Tips to Balance Work and Home Responsibilities

If there’s one thing you’ve likely realized by now, it’s that life is rarely one-dimensional! You probably have a hard time identifying a period in your past when life proceeded without interruptions.

But have you ever thought about this? Those “interruptions” belong there because life is meant to be multi-dimensional.

Your life is interesting and fulfilling because of variety. Variety in the professional and personal aspects of your life make every day worth living. Now all you really need to do is learn how to balance it all.

Train yourself to balance life’s demands by implementing these effective habits:

1. Prioritize. Although you may be a little hesitant to go through this step, it’s vital.

·  Do you find yourself putting greater effort into your career? Perhaps that’s where your passion lies right now. It’s important to come to terms with that.

·  Have you experienced being at work and contemplating where to take your kids this weekend? Maybe that’s truly your focus, and that’s okay too!

·  The first step is determining what’s more important to you. After you’ve done that, consider whether you can afford to be in that position. If there are factors pointing to unrealistic priorities, be honest with yourself. Put first things first!

2. Create a distinction. Now that you’ve outlined your priorities, your next task is to ensure the responsibilities are properly distinguished. Are there certain responsibilities that really shouldn’t be on your radar right now?

·  Earning another degree can certainly add to your qualifications, but is the timing right? If your job is already fulfilling, how about putting off more schooling for now? Use your time wisely so you can balance professional and personal responsibilities.

·  It’s great if your kids can participate in tons of extracurricular activities. But do you have the time to attend all the games and recitals? Meet them halfway by limiting the activities, or share the responsibilities with your spouse.

3. Stick to a dedicated schedule. It’s only fair to give each aspect of your life the time it deserves. Once you’ve identified the priorities, avoid allowing both areas of your life to intertwine.

·  If you’ve allocated three hours each evening to those special people in your life, ensure you stick to that. This will keep your relationships intact.

·  Sure, unexpected occurrences may pop up at work and throw your plans out of whack. But what’s important is that you make the effort to stick to schedules as much as possible.

4. Make it worth your while. When you’ve identified set windows of time for specific responsibilities, maintain your focus, and follow through.

·  If it’s time for work, make it all about work. Try to produce your best quality and get the best results. That way, you’ll feel at ease when you’re ready to move on to your personal time. You’ll rest better knowing you’ve given your best at work.

The same thing goes for personal time. Turn off the television. Silence your cell phone. Shut down your computer. Allow yourself to take care of personal responsibilities without interruption.

When you practice these tips regularly, you’ll find that it gets a little easier each day to balance these two different areas of your life.

Soon, you’ll be able to handle any unexpected circumstance without getting flustered because you have a good handle on balancing your work and home lives.

❤️ Do you have work-life balance in your relationships?

❤️ Are you spending valuable time with your family and close friends?

Some say work-life balance is not achievable, while others say you can. What is a balanced life, really? It is what you choose it to be. There will be times in our lives when we think it can never be achievable. The question may come – How do you stay balanced when you feel everything is crashing down around you?

❤️ It may be time to step back, say enough, and refocus on what truly matters.

Play can be challenging if you come from a life where you are expected to be serious. Maybe you don’t allow yourself to play or need permission to play. Perhaps you need a purpose for play. So give yourself a purpose for the play. The purpose for play could be “I’m stimulating my creative mind” or “discovering lateral thinking and new ways of coming up with solutions”.

❤️ What does play mean for you?

❤️ What will it add to your life?

This can be a great way to encourage play and provide an opportunity to invigorate your life.

Life will be chaotic, hectic, and disappointing, but having some strategies will soften the experience. How we react to it is what determines happiness. Put some of these suggestions into practice and don’t forget to step back, breathe, enjoy your life, schedule playtime with family and friends, and let go of what does not matter. Live life to the fullest!

Why Have Quiet Alone Time?

Quote by Ester Buchholz ~ “Others inspire us, information feeds us, practice improves our performance, but we need quiet time to figure things out, to emerge with new discoveries, to unearth original answers.”

I read this quote recently, and it hit home for me. For me, I need quiet alone time to recharge and relax. What about you? Do you spend any amount of time without background noise? Do you schedule any alone time for yourself at all?

Today’s world is busy and loud. I know people that have to have background noise all of the time.  I am not saying it is wrong or anything, but how do you think with all the noise around you?  Or is it an escape mechanism not to be left alone in your thoughts?

Why Have Quiet Alone Time?

🦋 Spending quiet alone time is found to relax the body and mind, create calm, and reduce the overwhelming feelings that lead to burnout.

🦋 Spending time alone, let’s the mind wander and allows the brain to problem solve subconsciously.

🦋 Spending time alone, sparks creativity.

🦋  Spending time alone, you get to know yourself better through self-reflection.

🦋  Alone time increases empathy and compassion for others.

🦋  Time alone increases productivity.

🦋  People who enjoy having alone time experience less depression.

Taking alone time for at least 5 to 10 minutes a day rejuvenates you. It allows you to review your day and life goals. What is working and what is not. How can I change it for the better and get where I want to be. Spending time alone allows you to do what you enjoy, whether it is a hobby or journaling. It is your time to be you! 🙂  ~ Patti

Self-Reflection Question:

When are you going to start taking alone time for you?

National Workaholics Day – What Does This Mean?

Today is National Workaholics Day – July 5, 2020.

What does this mean?

This day is to raise awareness to balance work and home life by encouraging the overachievers to schedule time away from work and enjoy life outside of work demands.

What is the definition of a Workaholic? According to Wikipedia:

workaholic is a person who works compulsively. The term originates from alcoholism. The person works at the cost of their sleep, meeting friends or family. While the term generally implies that the person enjoys their work, it can also alternately imply that they simply feel compelled to do it.

What are some ways to create a little balance in your everyday life?

  1. Do Something Fun
  2. Spend Time Loving Your Family
  3. Journal About the Good Things in Your Life
  4. Smile and Laugh Often

Celebrate Today! 🎉

  • Schedule a massage or spa day.
  • Take a slow pace walk with the family and your pet.
  • Watch a funny movie with your loved ones.
  • Plan an awesome vacation.

Working all the time will eventually lead to burnout. Take a few minutes out of your day today, do something you enjoy outside of work, and plan a getaway from work. Leave a comment on how you celebrated today. 🙂

Take it easy, enjoy today and, live life to the fullest. ~ Patti
